I didn\u2019t turn to watch the flight attendant open the door and extend the stairs for our final passenger. And, true to form, Ethan didn\u2019t make any noise when he boarded.<\/p>\n

\u201cGlad you could join us,\u201d Fletcher said after Ethan had relayed to the captain that we were ready to depart. I sucked in a breath and turned, sweeping my gaze all the way up to his intense and beautiful eyes. There was that feeling of being weightless again. How did he have such an effect on me? And the wild part was he stared at me as if he felt that same weightlessness. His chest rose with a deep breath as he strode forward and took the seat across the aisle from Fletcher.<\/p>\n

My brain was buzzing, and it was the first thing that came out, rather than a greeting. \u201cYou rescued Kara Hayward?\u201d Ethan\u2019s surprise was quickly replaced with irritation, directed at the other man. \u201cYes. What else did he tell you?\u201d Before I could say anything, Fletcher replied, only in German. Whatever was said, it was utterly shocking, and Ethan jolted. His tone was pure accusation. \u201cYou told him we slept together?\u201d<\/p>\n

I gnashed my teeth for a moment. \u201cNo, but I\u2019m sure your reaction just did.\u201d Fletcher grinned. \u201cClever girl. Certainly more clever than you.\u201d He waved off Ethan\u2019s icy stare as he stood, collected the last of the lunch items on the tray, and moved toward the galley. His departure forced my attention to Ethan. He looked weary, and there was something else at the edges of his eyes I couldn\u2019t place. Worry? \u201cAre you all right?\u201d<\/p>\n

He considered how to answer, perhaps wanting to lie, but the truth won out. \u201cI\u2019m exhausted,\u201d he admitted. \u201cYou?\u201d I nodded and forced myself to sound casual to mask my anxiety. \u201cI\u2019m keeping it together.\u201d His gaze was inescapable. \u201cI\u2019ve noticed.\u201d A compliment from him? I felt flushed, heat warming my body. Determined to distract myself, I attempted to buckle my seatbelt, but the sharp sting across my palm reminded me of my cut.<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t a baby, but it hurt like hell. The pain disappeared when Ethan rose from his seat. \u201cI can do that.\u201d \u201cOh, that\u2019s okay. You don\u2019t have\u2060\u2014\u201d But it was too late. I sat utterly still with my breath held as he leaned over, so incredibly close that it tempted me to reach out and touch him.<\/p>\n

To grasp his chin with my good hand and pull his mouth down to mine. I was just barely able to resist. There was the faint sound of metal clicking, and he tugged gently on the belt to cinch it around my hips.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t much of a runway. More a level strip of grassy land that the luxury game lodge groomed for their wealthiest clients, so they had somewhere to set down their private jets. The only alternative was to land at Johannesburg and drive three hours to the middle of nowhere. There was no way the eldest son of the Abramo family was going to put up with that. The plane bounced and shuddered down the runway, and I had to fight the yoke in my hands to bring the aircraft to a stop on the dirt-packed, uneven road.<\/p>\n

Then I powered down the engines and the jet slowed to a crawl with South African soil beneath the wheels. A few more flights and my trial contract as the Abramos\u2019 pilot would be up.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
