She has the decency to look abashed as she passes us. Tate holds me the whole time, a hand brushing my hair. I don\u2019t cry. I hold the tears in. I think Tate squeezing me holds the tears – and everything else- in.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Darlin\u2019. I\u2019m so sorry this happened,\u201d He whispers. \u201cYou\u2019re okay. I got you.\u201d He rubs my back until I take one last shuttering breath. When the back door opens, signaling the boys return from taking the puppy potty, I straighten up. \u201cMom. Can we rename him?\u201d Hudson asks as the puppy comes in and pees right on the rug. Hudson\u2019s jaw drops. \u201cI swear, he just went outside. The snow was yellow!\u201d For some reason, that\u2019s what does it.<\/p>\n

My head falls back as I start cackling. I can\u2019t stop, even as I\u2019m wiping away tears and it\u2019s not long before Hudson and Matty join in. Tate tries to fight it, but he starts chuckling too. He draws me back under his arm, not worrying about if the boys see this time. He comes back smelling faintly of smoke. With Rambo fed, we can finally get onto the presents. Our eyes meet and he settles next to me on the couch again. His thigh presses against mine. I don\u2019t move away. I glance at him to find he\u2019s already looking down at me.<\/p>\n

I quickly avert my gaze back to the boys pulling boxes from under the tree. The boys jump up and down when they open the video games I drove all over town for. Tate gives me a heartwarming smile when he realizes Matty got one from me too. \u201cMatty and I got you something too, Hudson.\u201d Tate says. Hudson beams. Matty pulls the tall, skinny present from the corner of the room.<\/p>\n

He presents it to Hudson who can hardly contain his excitement. I find myself leaning forward curiously. Hudson wastes no time tearing it open. It\u2019s a camo fishing pole and tackle box. His smile falters for a minute and I know he\u2019s thinking of the cancelled trip with TJ. \u201cOh, uh. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
