The ride back to the house might have been called amicable silence by anyone else, but Hildy’s temper was at a low boil. She was disproportionately mad at him, she knew, but couldn’t seem to shake it. In that moment, he was the sink for all of her frustrations with her lack of progress with this trip, and the discomfort she felt being under a magnifying glass.

She wasn’t even going to touch on the emotions that came super-glued to the current holiday. When you hit the driveway, I mean. I’d hate to miss the rest of the festivities since my passenger was dumb enough to bail when the car was in motion. A&E departments are the devil on holidays.” She rolled her eyes, trying not to feel stupid.

All rights reserved. OceanofPDF.com CHAPTER ONE AS HER UBER pulled up to the curb, Hildy Dannaher pressed a hand to her middle, trying to quell the sudden riot of butterflies.

This might actually be the most impulsive thing she had ever done, with the possible exception of planting her first script on the front seat of a director’s convertible when she was fresh out of USC. Fifteen years later and she still couldn’t make eye contact with the man whenever they ran into each other at industry events.

Here’s hoping things worked out better this time. As she looked up at the austere, century-old brick building, with its first- floor pub incongruously glowing with the electric hue of a half-dozen neon signs and packed full of late-night revelers, she realized with a start that there was no need to check the address, which she’d hurriedly looked up not even six hours earlier after she’d booked the last-minute flight from L.A.

to San Francisco. She definitely remembered this place. Being here now was like stepping into a memory—one she’d barely known she’d even possessed.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
