Is that a crime? Actually, I know it isn\u2019t since this is what I do for a living.\u201d \u201cStalk people?\u201d He gave her a vaguely chastising look.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee to the welfare of others. You know, like watching out for poor teenage girls who get their heads bitten off by people who they think are their friends.\u201d Hildy deflated a little, her pace slowing. \u201cI told her I was sorry. But\u2014\u201d \u201cAnd now you are going to justify yourself. Don\u2019t bother. It\u2019s none of my business other than to say you need to have a care for people\u2019s feelings. Especially when their intentions are good.\u201d Her cheeks warmed with a messy combination of guilt at her shortness with Bree and indignation at being scolded by Kiernan.<\/p>\n

The day just kept getting worse and worse. In the embarrassment of the moment, she turned and scowled at him. \u201cSorry, but you don\u2019t get to stand there and lecture me like I\u2019m some sort of child.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not standing here and lecturing you. I\u2019m walking and lecturing. Much more efficient, don\u2019t you think?\u201d He was teasing her again, but she wasn\u2019t in the teasing mood. She stopped abruptly. He took a step past her before looking back askance.<\/p>\n

Blowing out a short breath, she said, \u201cIf I let you drive me, will this be over sooner?\u201d He grinned as though completely unaffected by her attitude. \u201cAbsolutely.\u201d \u201cThen lead the way, officer,\u201d she said, sweeping a hand out in front of her. The ride back to the house might have been called amicable silence by anyone else, but Hildy\u2019s temper was at a low boil. She was disproportionately mad at him, she knew, but couldn\u2019t seem to shake it. In that moment, he was the sink for all of her frustrations with her lack of progress with this trip, and the discomfort she felt being under a magnifying glass.<\/p>\n

She wasn\u2019t even going to touch on the emotions that came super-glued to the current holiday. All in all, it was just too much. The moment he turned into her driveway, her hand found the door handle, not even caring that she still had another minute or two to go until they reached the cottage.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you going to tuck and roll, I hope?\u201d \u201cWhat?\u201d she said, confused. \u201cTuck and roll. When you hit the driveway, I mean. I\u2019d hate to miss the rest of the festivities since my passenger was dumb enough to bail when the car was in motion. A&E departments are the devil on holidays.\u201d She rolled her eyes, trying not to feel stupid.<\/p>\n

This might actually be the most impulsive thing she had ever done, with the possible exception of planting her first script on the front seat of a director\u2019s convertible when she was fresh out of USC.
