He gave them a vision of an aged god being transformed back to his youth as the years fell away from his flesh. The two gods cried out in anguished longing, and Cael delved into their memories. He perceived their current condition \u2013 they were lying on beds in the midst of gold and splendour, their physical forms shrunken and skeletal, their eye sockets vacant, their teeth gone, and their flesh desiccated and withered. \u2018I can save you from this living death,\u2019 said Cael.<\/p>\n

\u2018I can return you to what you were before, and, in return, you will give me and my friends all the help I require.\u2019 \u2018Are you a god?\u2019 said Nostram. \u2018I am not,\u2019 said Cael. \u2018I am something better; I am a dream mage, created by Nathaniel.\u2019 \u2018Save us!\u2019 cried Lieka. \u2018I beg you.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018To do so, I must know where you are.\u2019 \u2018We are in the palace of the Three Pillars,\u2019 said Lieka. \u2018Come to us there.\u2019 He glanced at the members of the Sacred Family, who were staring at Cael in silence. \u2018My children,\u2019 he cried, \u2018you must see that this man arrives safely; he must come to the Three Pillars. Where are the three sages who found him?\u2019 Sage Baila and the other two sages stepped forward, their heads bowed.<\/p>\n

\u2018Honour this man,\u2019 said the god, \u2018and bring him and his companions to the Three Pillars; for they have come to set us free.\u2019 Cael raised a hand and severed their connection to the dream vision. He opened his eyes, and saw the other three mages coughing and spluttering as they came back to their bodies in the small, smoky chamber within the temple. They stared at Cael, then they fell to their knees before him.<\/p>\n

\u2018How long will it take to travel to the Three Pillars?\u2019 he said. \u2018Several days, my lord,\u2019 said one of the sages. \u2018Then we shall leave in the morning,\u2019 said Cael, as he got to his feet. \u2018Good night.\u2019 He walked out of the temple and into the building where he shared a room with Cole. Rosie had set up her bed in an adjoining chamber, but she was sitting with Cole when Cael entered the bedroom. \u2018That didn\u2019t take long,\u2019 said Cole.<\/p>\n

\u2018I assume it didn\u2019t work?\u2019 \u2018No, it worked,\u2019 said Cael. \u2018We might have been wrong about our theory. I don\u2019t think venta was a failed experiment into creating salve.\u2019 \u2018No?\u2019 said Cole. \u2018What is it, then?\u2019 said Rosie. \u2018I think it was an experiment into creating dream vision,\u2019 said Cael.<\/p>\n

\u2018I spoke to the sleeping gods. I told them about salve.\u2019 \u2018What did they say?\u2019 said Rosie. Cael smiled. \u2018They begged us to come to the Three Pillars. This will be your first and last night in this forest, Rosie; we\u2019re leaving at dawn.\u2019<\/p>\n
