My translating device was quite good. When I spoke in Japanese, it translated the words into English and played the audio out loud.<\/p>\n

Although it meant communicating through a machine, it was much better than nothing getting across at all. The three of us had heard what Keiko and the other assistant were talking about. I looked up at the ceiling, thinking back to what they had said. \u201cI feel bad for those girls, being used by Sally too.\u201d \u201cSally wants that project to succeed no matter what.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why\u2014\u201d \u201cI wonder what the project is,\u201d I murmured to myself. \u201cOh,\u201d said Chloe. \u201cI heard that Sally\u2019s working on a really big job right now. The assistant who invited me was talking about it.\u201d Amelie and I hummed. \u201cShe said a new building was built on Fifth Avenue, and there\u2019s gonna be an art exhibition on the top floor called \u2018Light and Shadow: Vermeer and Meegeren.\u2019 It\u2019s gonna display both artists\u2019 works at once. What\u2019s more, it opens on the same day as the exhibition we\u2019re working on.\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea of exhibiting not only Vermeer\u2019s works, but also those of Meegeren\u2014who was known for his Vermeer forgeries\u2014sounded interesting. \u201cVermeer is really popular, and Meegeren\u2019s forgeries are a hot topic right now,\u201d said Amelie. \u201cHe\u2019s gaining popularity too.\u201d I nodded as I listened to them. \u201cSally\u2019s putting a lot of effort into that exhibition, and according to her assistant, she really doesn\u2019t have time to hang out with us budding curators,\u201d Chloe explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat makes sense.\u201d I nodded again. Not only was Sally busy with the Vermeer exhibition, the artist for the other one she was working on had been arrested. She surely had her hands full dealing with the chaos.<\/p>\n

I, Aoi Mashiro, had been spacing out behind the counter at the antique store Kura, a book open in front of me, when the door chime rang. \u201cE-Excuse me,\u201d said the visitor, my best friend Kaori Miyashita. She stepped inside and timidly looked around. \u201cWelcome, Kaori. I\u2019m here by myself today.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s what I thought since I only saw you.\u201d She sat at the counter and looked down at my book. Apparently she had only come in after checking the state of the store from outside.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, are you studying English for your New York trip?\u201d \u201cYeah.\u201d I nodded. I had been reading a book on conversational English. \u201cHolmes got me a translation device, but I want to study a bit too.\u201d \u201cHow admirable.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not that impressive. Even if I try now, I won\u2019t be able to learn much.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s more likely that it\u2019ll end up being a waste of time.\u201d I\u2019d been interested in foreign countries for a while now. You could even say I\u2019d been longing to go abroad. If you learn one English word a day, that means you\u2019ll master three hundred and sixty-five words in a year. I think it\u2019s the gradual accumulation that matters. Like they say, Rome wasn\u2019t built in a day.\u201d She held up her index finger. \u201cYeah, it\u2019s not a waste.\u201d I nodded. Suddenly, I thought of Holmes. He may have been born with an extraordinary eye for observation and appraisal, but his wealth of knowledge had been accumulated ever since he was a child.<\/p>\n
