I ask, walking up to the dugout where Grant is standing inside, leaning on the railing overlooking the field. Wearing a short sleeve shirt, gym shorts, and sneakers, he looks every bit the pitcher I once knew. \u201cReliving your glory days?\u201d He rolls his eyes, but offers me a smirk. \u201cWhat are you doing down here?\u201d \u201cSaw you working with the grounds crew. Do you do that often?\u201d He shrugs.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot usually.\u201d \u201cI went by your office to check on the progress with the field prep when I saw you working from the window.\u201d He looks over at me when I step up beside him. His arm brushes mine and it feels like an electric shock. These lingering touches have given me life the past couple weeks.<\/p>\n

A hand on my back as he moves around me in the kitchen. A brush of the hand as I walk by in the hallway at work. The edge of his thigh against mine as we sit on the couch and watch a movie. It\u2019s part of why I\u2019ve been keeping my distance. I tend to run from feelings, and I want Grant more than my next breath. \u201cYou can check that off the list then.\u201d<\/p>\n

His shoulders are tense, and his clipped responses irk me. Trying again, I say, \u201cI think Monday will be a massive success for the Troubadours organization and a big step in the right direction for Chase\u2019s image rehabilitation.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sure it will. The buzz this has created and the positive spin are good for the team.\u201d The sun has fallen behind the office building, and it casts Grant in a shadow. An ominous feeling settles in my gut. \u201cI went over the final touches on the checklist with Mary earlier.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re all set. Vendors will start setting up tomorrow and Sunday.\u201d \u201cSounds good.\u201d I expel a frustrated breath and throw my hands out to my sides. \u201cWhat is your problem?\u201d He answers my question with a question. \u201cWhy did you come down here?\u201d Because you looked really fucking hot standing on the pitcher\u2019s mound and I couldn\u2019t stop myself from a close-up view. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve been avoiding me all week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I haven\u2019t. I\u2019ve been busy working to make sure everything is finalized for the event.\u201d \u201cCut the shit, Taylor.\u201d \u201cWhy are you in such a mood?\u201d \u201cProbably because we spent all weekend together, Monday rolled around and you ghosted me. Then here comes Friday and you\u2019re searching me out looking like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
