Too low and the bed beneath may feel dark and cramped, but too high and it will be difficult to get up there. As a load-bearing structure, you will also need to factor in the weight of the load it will need to safely support. Fix the platform firmly to the wall, anchoring into joists or structural studs. Opting for a sturdy rope ladder rather than a fixed ladder means you can roll it up and out of the way, giving better access to anything underneath.

Safety is essential, especially for children. You will need to install sturdy barriers around all open edges, with any gaps being small enough to prevent a child getting their head caught or being able to climb through. If you decide to add a fun touch by painting a mural all over the platform, give everything a coat of clear varnish once completed to make it more durable.

Finn’s bedroom ‘Children’s bedrooms can be a bit dull, but installing a mezzanine level has been a fun way of doing something different with the space. We looked at the usual bunk beds and variations on that, but in the end we got a carpenter in to make a solid and secure wooden platform, which was a great deal for £300.

We’ve turned it into a little book nook, and Finn loves to read up there or take a few special toys. We’ve got a drop-down rope ladder that can be stored away when not in use, and I’ve painted a mural on the platform using tester pots of the colours we’ve used in the rest of the house, so it all ties in together.’ Office ‘The small third bedroom makes a perfect office. I painted the walls and door in Crown’s Powdered Clay, added some simple shelving, a soft rug to cover the floorboards, and a glass lampshade.’

Abbie bought Finn’s blue metal Minnen bed and Trofast storage from IKEA. The sunny yellow walls are painted in GoodHome Gran Via from B&Q Abbie’s love of metallics even extends to her gold-painted door frames ‘My dad found the wrought-iron bed, painted in Farrow & Ball’s Selvedge, on eBay, and I painted the walls in Valspar’s New York City Winter from B&Q,’ says Abbie. The bedding is from M&S and the hanging chair is from Rose & Grey Inspiring homes July 2026 What I learned Great design isn’t about throwing everything at a space.

I finally had the freedom to fully embrace maximalism, which taught me to pair pieces with intention, use restraint, and create a cohesive, balanced scheme. Samples are essential.

elcome to your July issue!
