Shards of glass and bits of plaster peppered their faces. Strobe lights mounted on weapons careened around the room and bounced crazily off the ceiling as everyone hugged the walls and searched for targets. Carefully rehearsed \u02e7\u02d4\u02d6\u02e7\u02dc\u02d6\u02e6\u0003\u0404\u02d8\u02ea\u0003\u02e2\u02e8\u02e7\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u0003\u02ea\u02dc\u02e1\u02d7\u02e2\u02ea\u0003\u02ea\u02dc\u02e7\u02db\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d4\u02e7\u0003\u0403\u02e5\u02e6\u02e7\u0003\u02e9\u02e2\u02df\u02df\u02d8\u02ec\u029f\u0003\u02d4\u02e1\u02d7\u0003\u02dc\u02e1\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u0003 pandemonium that ensued the entire squad realised it was pinned down and trapped. \u2018We\u2019re all gonna die!\u2019 one of the US soldiers shouted.\u201d In his book House to House: An Epic Memoir of War, Bellavia also describes the desperate situation the American soldiers now found themselves in: \u201cThe bulk of our two squads are trapped inside the living room.<\/p>\n

The insurgents are dug into positions in a central stairwell, just inside one door off the foyer and with a clear shot through another door to the living room\u2026 They can shoot through that doorway and kill anyone making a run for the foyer, since our guys are behind the far wall of the living room.\u201d \u02bc\u02e7\u0003\u02ea\u02d4\u02e6\u0003\u02db\u02e2\u02e5\u02e5\u02dc\u0403\u02d6\u02d4\u02df\u02df\u02ec\u0003\u02d6\u02df\u02d8\u02d4\u02e5\u0003\u02e7\u02e2\u0003\u02b5\u02d8\u02df\u02df\u02d4\u02e9\u02dc\u02d4\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d4\u02e7\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u0003\u02b4\u02e0\u02d8\u02e5\u02dc\u02d6\u02d4\u02e1\u02e6\u0003\u02db\u02d4\u02d7\u0003 walked into a well-prepared ambush. He knew he had to act quickly or his platoon faced destruction.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive me a 240 gunner and a SAW!\u201d he shouted. A fellow soldier passed his M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW), and then Bellavia intentionally \u02d8\u02eb\u02e3\u02e2\u02e6\u02d8\u02d7\u0003\u02db\u02dc\u02e0\u02e6\u02d8\u02df\u02d9\u0003\u02e7\u02e2\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u0003\u02d8\u02e1\u02d8\u02e0\u02ec\u03e0\u02e6\u0003\u0403\u02e5\u02d8\u029f\u0003\u02d8\u02e1\u02e7\u02d8\u02e5\u02dc\u02e1\u02da\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u0003\u02d7\u02e2\u02e2\u02e5\u02ea\u02d4\u02ec\u0003 \u02d9\u02e5\u02e2\u02e0\u0003\u02ea\u02db\u02d8\u02e5\u02d8\u0003\u02db\u02d8\u0003\u02d7\u02dc\u02e5\u02d8\u02d6\u02e7\u02df\u02ec\u0003\u02d8\u02e1\u02da\u02d4\u02da\u02d8\u02d7\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u0003\u02d9\u02e2\u02e5\u02e7\u02dc\u0403\u02d8\u02d7\u0003\u02d8\u02e1\u02d8\u02e0\u02ec\u0003 position. Firing the SAW, he was able to lay down a \u02e6\u02e8\u02e3\u02e3\u02e5\u02d8\u02e6\u02e6\u02dc\u02e1\u02da\u0003\u0403\u02e5\u02d8\u0003\u02e2\u02e1\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u0003\u02dc\u02e1\u02e6\u02e8\u02e5\u02da\u02d8\u02e1\u02e7\u02e6\u029f\u0003\u02d9\u02e2\u02e5\u02d6\u02dc\u02e1\u02da\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u02e0\u0003\u02e7\u02e2\u0003\u02de\u02d8\u02d8\u02e3\u0003 their heads down and giving the pinned-down US troops a vital opportunity to withdraw from the building. Bellavia \u02de\u02d8\u02e3\u02e7\u0003\u02e8\u02e3\u0003\u02db\u02dc\u02e6\u0003\u0403\u02e5\u02d8\u0003\u02e8\u02e1\u02e7\u02dc\u02df\u0003\u02db\u02dc\u02e6\u0003\u02c6\u02b4\u02ca\u0003\u02e5\u02d4\u02e1\u0003\u02e2\u02e8\u02e7\u0003\u02e2\u02d9\u0003\u02d4\u02e0\u02e0\u02e8\u02e1\u02dc\u02e7\u02dc\u02e2\u02e1\u029f\u0003\u02d4\u02e7\u0003 which point he also withdrew.<\/p>\n

His actions had allowed for a successful extraction from a near catastrophic situation. \u02c1\u02d8\u02e9\u02d8\u02e5\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u02df\u02d8\u02e6\u02e6\u029f\u0003\u02e7\u02db\u02d8\u0003\u0403\u02da\u02db\u02e7\u0003\u02ea\u02d4\u02e6\u0003\u02d9\u02d4\u02e5\u0003\u02d9\u02e5\u02e2\u02e0\u0003\u02e2\u02e9\u02d8\u02e5\u02a1\u0003\u03e2\u02ba\u02d8\u02e7\u0003\u02d4\u0003\u02b5\u02e5\u02d4\u02d7\u02df\u02d8\u02ec\u0003 up here, now!\u201d Bellavia shouted into his radio. When the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle arrived, an attempt was made to neutralise the building using its 0.9in (25mm) gun, but it proved ineffective. Bellavia recalled: \u201cI had wanted the Brad to smash through the wall, drive into the palm grove and then tear up the side of the building with 25mm shells. Then we could call in a tank and blast the house to dust\u2026<\/p>\n

But it isn\u2019t going to go down like that\u2026 [the] gunner has a hard time even getting his cannon trained on the house.
