And indeed, the sprinkled on dust seems to hold back the flood of sweat and to make their power persist for a long time.

Also, it becomes a defense against being harmed by the winds hitting their bodies when their pores are open. In addition, it cleans off the filth and makes the man more glistening. I, for my part, would gladly put one of those pallid26 men who live in the shade side by side with whomever you might choose from those exercised in the Lyceum. Having cleaned off the dust and mud, I would ask you which of them you would pray to resemble.

I know that right away from first sight, even if you had not tested what either could do, you would choose to be solid and disciplined rather than feeble and soft and pallid from lack of blood and its retreat to the insides. [30] These are the things, Anacharsis, in which we train our young men, thinking that they become good guardians of our city.

And because of them we will live in freedom, prevailing over those hostile to us if they attack, and be fearsome to our neighbors so that most of them will cower beneath us and pay us tribute.27 In peacetime as well, we make much better use of them [our young men], who contend in honor over nothing shameful and do not turn towards violence out of idleness, but pass their time among themselves keeping busy with these kinds of things [exercises].

And again, what I was saying about the common good and the height of the city’s well- being is this: once they have been prepared for peace and war in the best way, the youth would show themselves to be zealous about what for us is most beautiful. Anacharsis [31] So if enemies should ever attack you, Solon, then you yourselves, anointed with olive oil and dusted, will advance with clenched fists thrust out against them.

And of course they will cower before you and flee, fearing that you might sprinkle sand into their mouths while they are agape. Or, having jumped around them to get on their back, you would clinch them around their belly with your legs, and you would strangle them, having put your forearm under their helmet.

For a full list of titles in the series, go to https://press.princeton.edu/series/ancient-wisdom-for-modern-readers.
