She\u2019s both directing it and playing one of the lead roles. It will be the first time Leonore and her theatre crowd have met Ben and I\u2019ve also persuaded Rebecca to come with Jesus-Jakob. Ben\u2019s freshly shaven and showered, and I\u2019ve made sure he\u2019s wearing his best clothes. \u2018Can\u2019t you wear the other jacket?\u2019 I say when it\u2019s time to put our coats on. \u2018I like this jacket,\u2019 Ben says. \u2018It looks a bit uncool.<\/p>\n

Take the other one we found in the charity shop.\u2019 \u2018I like this one,\u2019 he says with a tone that indicates the discussion is over. As we walk towards the little theatre, the first snowflakes of winter start to fall. Ben doesn\u2019t seem too enthusiastic about going to the theatre, and instead is looking longingly at the small wooden huts on Graben, where they\u2019re selling Christmas punch and gl\u00fchwein.<\/p>\n

\u2018Do we have to watch the whole performance?\u2019 he asks. \u2018Once we\u2019ve thrown our rotten tomatoes at the actors we\u2019ll probably have to run out as soon as possible,\u2019 I answer. \u2018Really?\u2019 Ben says. \u2018Idiot,\u2019 I say and smile at him. \u2018Who knows, maybe you\u2019ll love the play. It\u2019s full of sex and smut and drama.\u2019 He doesn\u2019t look convinced. Unfortunately, Closer isn\u2019t good. At one point, a set panel falls off the wall for no reason, the lighting is confusing, and the four actors seem to think they\u2019re in four different plays.<\/p>\n

Ben starts laughing out loud in the scene where Leonore does a pole dance that\u2019s meant to be seductive, and everyone turns around to look at him. The elephant in the room is that Leonore has given herself the role of the young girl rather than the role Julia Roberts played in the film version.<\/p>\n

When the play is finally over, everyone piles into the little foyer-bar where complimentary Red Bull is being served. There are metal trays of dried-out canap\u00e9s and cocktail tomatoes with some kind of salmon-pink cream. The Beige Man stands in a corner not talking to anyone. \u2018Rebecca, this is Ben,\u2019 I say. \u2018Ben, Rebecca.\u2019 \u2018Nice to meet you,\u2019 Rebecca says. \u2018Likewise,\u2019 he says. \u2018Please tell me you hated that as much as I did. Julia\u2019s too kind to admit how terrible the play actually was.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018It was pretty horrible, wasn\u2019t it?\u2019 Rebecca says in a half-whisper and leans closer to Ben. I can see she approves of him. But on the other hand she\u2019d probably approve of anyone who wasn\u2019t Matthias, who she always openly disliked. When Leonore comes out of her dressing room I give her the bouquet I brought with me and tell her how wonderful she was. Since Ben moved in with me I\u2019ve stopped going out with Leonore and the mood between us has become frosty to say the least, as though my new relationship is a personal betrayal.<\/p>\n

\u2018It went well, didn\u2019t it?\u2019 Leonore says, with a self-confidence you can\u2019t help but admire. \u2018Leonore, this is Ben.<\/p>\n
