\u201cBut no more secrets. If I\u2019m in this, I need to know the truth.\u201d I swallowed hard, his words settling in my chest. Some truths\u2014like the one about Luke\u2014were too dangerous to share, at least for now. Liam looked at me, his brows furrowed, his gaze unwavering and piercing. \u201cWhy did you come back?\u201d he asked, his voice quiet but weighted. \u201cAnd why did you leave Carnell in the first place? You seem to have a good relationship with him now.\u201d I sighed as the memories I\u2019d tried so hard to bury clawed their way to the surface.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t them,\u201d I said, glancing briefly at Carnell and Cal. \u201cIt was the others. The way they treated me, the way they treated my mom. It was suffocating. Like we didn\u2019t belong, like we were a mistake just for existing.\u201d Carnell\u2019s expression darkened, and his jaw tightened as he looked away. \u201cI should have done more,\u201d he said softly, his voice edged with regret. \u201cI should have protected you.\u201d Cal nodded, his arms crossed over his broad chest. \u201cHe\u2019s right.<\/p>\n

We both should have.\u201d I shook my head, my voice decisive. \u201cNo. It\u2019s not on you. If I hadn\u2019t left, I never would\u2019ve met Luke. I wouldn\u2019t have had Liam.<\/p>\n
