Smoke rose in thin threads from peat fires, curling into the pale sky. Nets hung to dry along the water’s edge, stiff with frost, while a handful of fishermen pulled their boats up onto the stony bank.

The village looked peaceful at first glance, yet even from the hilltop Ramsay felt the tension. No dogs barked at their approach, no children’s laughter carried across the fields. The men working by the shore paused, eyes narrowing at the riders on the ridge. A woman gathering reeds froze, clutching her bundle close as though shielding herself from more than just the cold. Halton reined in beside Ramsay, his breath misting. “There it is.

Kirkloch.” Ramsay said nothing at first, studying the village. A place of hard labor and harder winters, now shadowed by fear. He could sense it already, the same fear that had clung to Braemuir like smoke. Only here, it seemed sharper—closer to breaking. “Looks like they’re expectin’ us,” Robbie muttered from behind. “Aye,” Ramsay replied at last, voice low and steady. “An’ not wi’ open arms.” He nudged his horse forward. The company followed, their descent from the ridge silent but for the muffled thud of hooves and the clink of harness.

As they rode down toward the lochside, Ramsay’s gaze lingered on the wary faces turning to watch them, and he knew: the fight ahead would not just be against the beast. As Ramsay and his company reached the edge of Kirkloch, the fishermen by the shore had already abandoned their nets and taken up poles and tools, holding them like makeshift spears. The men were gaunt, weathered by wind and toil, but there was a desperate edge in their eyes that spoke louder than any blade.

A cluster of women stood near the well, children hidden behind their skirts. One of them crossed herself quickly, as though warding off an evil omen. Another whispered, “Outsiders,” and the murmur spread like fire through dry grass. Ramsay raised a hand, halting his company just beyond the first cottages. He sat tall in the saddle, every inch the laird, though inside he felt the weight of the stares pressing on him. An older man, broad-shouldered though bent by years, stepped forward.

His hair was white as snow, but his eyes burned sharp and unyielding.

This book contains material protected under International and Federal Copyright Laws and treaties. Once there, all of the madness would be forgotten and he could hold his sweet Corine again. The thought of her drove him on. He must make it to her. He cursed himself for going against his judgment and the urges of the villagers to stay one more night and leave in the morning, but he wanted to be back in his own home and with his Corine. The wind whipped around him and the snow it drove, blinded him, but he knew the woods like no other.

He had followed his father on hunts since he was old enough to sit in the saddle and now, he was Laird of the Manor and these were his lands.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
