The desert isn’t a playground. It must be treated with the utmost respect.’ ‘I suppose people just don’t realise,’ Laura said sadly. She made a movement and the full sun fell on her thick mane of hair. ‘I suppose we’d better get going, Liza.’ ‘Don’t rush off because of me,’ said Sean, with a faintly wry smile on his face.

‘You’ll have to forgive me for staring, ma’am. We have a problem with a shortage of women out here and you’d be remarkable anywhere.’ ‘I think he likes you, Laura,’ Liza beamed. ‘When you’re not encouraging young Liza here with her lessons, I’d like to take you riding,’ Sean told Laura. ‘There are heaps of fascinating things to see.’ ‘Laura doesn’t ride very well.’ Liza gave a little cough. ‘I’ll soon teach her.’ ‘You couldn’t teach me!’ ‘That’s different.’ ‘I am surprised at you, Sean,’ Liza said.

She sounded so droll both adults burst out laughing, and that was the way Blaise Hunter found them as he rode down the bank. ‘So here you are, Sean,’ he called out rather testily. ‘Oh, Gawd!’ Sean looked curiously mortified. ‘Just came down to say hello to the girls.’ ‘I hope they’re appreciative.’ Sitting his gleaming jet-black horse, Blaise looked as if he wasn’t going to suffer any more delay. A vertical line was between his winged black brows and he looked impatient, intolerant and as arrogant as the devil.

‘I want you to lay that new man off. Do it right away. I won’t have anyone on the station who ill-treats stock.’ ‘What, Benson?’ Sean stifled an inappropriate exclamation. ‘Benson.’ The black eyes under the silver-grey Stetson looked little short of furious. ‘I told you when you hired him to watch him.’ ‘Right, Boss, I’ll get on it. Some of them are like that.’ ‘Not here, they’re not!’ ‘No.’ Sean turned back to Laura with a faint effort. ‘See you later, Miss Mallory.’ ‘Sean.’ She felt sorry for him and she didn’t know his other name.

The pain went straight to her heart Excluded from her father’s will, Laura was banished from her home by her cold unfeeling stepmother. Fate offered a solution in the form of Blaise Hunter, but he accepted her as his young daughter’s governess. The dynamic boss of the cattle station doubted Laura, a fragile beauty, could cope with the harsh outback.

Laura, too, had doubts. Not of the land but of the man, who, instinct warned her, could cause her far greater suffering. CHAPTER ONE THE big, book-lined office was beginning to grow dim, but still Howard Mitchell, solicitor, whose office it was, made no move to switch on a light.

He, like the girl opposite him, sat in a state of near-bemusement. A kindly, astute man, with a wide knowledge of human nature, Howard Mitchell was disturbed and unhappy hurting this young girl he had looked on as someone special since the moment he had met her at the entrancing age of five. Then, she had looked up at him with radiant eyes and held out a small hand like those exquisite little Princesses he had once seen in London, Elizabeth and Margaret Rose.

Her father, David Mallory, had brought her in to show her off, proud and delighting in his beautiful little daughter, talking about how smart she was, how adorable, while Howard had stood there smiling and congratulating him. Fifteen years before, and since then many upsets and tragedies. Now Howard sat forward, shaking his head with deep regret. ‘I’m so sorry, Laura. So terribly sorry.’

Laura said nothing, but sat quietly, narrow shoulders squared. ‘Your father loved you dearly, my dear. You know that.’ Laura dipped her head protectively so the smooth blonde mass of her heavy pageboy fell forward to shield her left cheek. ‘Yes,’ she murmured sadly, ‘it’s just that he loved my stepmother and Jamie more.’ Put into words it upset the elderly man desperately. ‘It was your father’s ambition, of course—a son. He was that kind of man.’

Nevertheless, Howard Mitchell, who had heard and seen just about everything when it came to wills, was astonished and seriously disturbed by his late client’s actions. Actions unknown to him. Howard’s partner, Tom Parker, had called it a ‘rotten shame’ and suggested what Howard suggested now. ‘We can, of course, contest the will,’ he said vigorously. ‘We have every chance of getting a favourable judgment.’ ‘I don’t want that, Uncle Howard,’ Laura answered, her voice low but emphatic.

‘Think about it, my dear,’ he urged her. ‘You’ve lived a very secure, comfortable life. You’re barely twenty years of age, only halfway through your studies, and as it is, you’ll be unable to continue full-time.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
