This close, I shifted my gaze from the streets and looked him over. Even on a recon mission he was dressed well in a dark navy suit tailored perfectly to his body. His shirt was a pristine white and pressed into crisp lines. His shoes were a darker brown and polished to a shine. He\u2019d put effort into his appearance tonight .<\/p>\n

. . but why? Even his normally unruly hair was styled to fall around his face. His amber eyes darted to mine. \u201cDo I meet your standards?\u201d I jerked my eyes away from him. \u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d \u201cKeep tellin\u2019 yourself that.\u201d He gave a dark rumbling chuckle. \u201cIs Kaso going to be angry at you if he finds out about us?\u201d I turned away from him and crossed my arms. The car glided through traffic like a hot knife through butter.<\/p>\n

He shrugged. \u201cIt\u2019s bad for business, and business has always come first. This mission is business.\u201d \u201cFair enough.\u201d I let the conversation fall to an easy silence. Andreas reached for the radio and flicked it on. One of our songs blared through the car and I smirked. He twisted the knob, tuning the old car to another station and another of our songs came on. He glared at me, then pushed the knob in shutting the radio off. \u201cI\u2019m surrounded by Virtues.\u201d \u201cWhat a struggle for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head. We somehow got out of Manhattan in record time and onto the Brooklyn Bridge. I leaned back in the seat and gazed up at the lights as we moved. I\u2019d always found the bridge to be beautiful, and my memory drifted back to when it\u2019d been originally built. \u201cI\u2019ve always loved this bridge. I remember when it was built.\u201d \u201cWasn\u2019t that long ago,\u201d Andres whispered. It wasn\u2019t often that I ran into someone who was older. It was almost comforting .<\/p>\n

I shook my head at him. \u201cYou\u2019re lucky me and my brother were available tonight.\u201d Benny nodded and held his hands out in front of him, the gold metal of his rings sparkling under the ceiling lights. \u201cI know, I know.\u201d \u201cEverything was fine,\u201d the other young vampire spoke up, but his voice was small and weak, like he was still trying to convince himself too.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had it.\u201d \u201cYou had it?\u201d My eyebrows rose. \u201cYou had it?\u201d I glanced over to my brother who stood next to a human female laid out on a rickety table. Her skin was deathly pale, and her sweat-matted, dark hair was stuck to her head. From across the room my vampire sense picked up her sluggish heartbeats. I scoffed and met my brother\u2019s eye while hiking my thumb in their direction. \u201cYou hear that, Andreas? They had it.\u201d My brother pursed his lips as he examined the IV he\u2019d placed in the woman\u2019s arm, then up at the bag of blood hanging beside her.<\/p>\n
