Bethan Simons investigates Marks of Is the marks system the ultimate tool for accountability and clarity? Or does it open the door to backlash, human error and being subject to the judge’s short-term memory?

Pictures by Peter Nixon and Elli Birch/Boots and Hooves CASUAL conversation sparked a revolution in the show ring: the introduction of marks in the assessment of classes. “It was 1994,” says pony breeder Tom Best. “At that time, there was only one section for ponies at the Horse of the Year Show [HOYS], which was judged using a marks system at the final; at local level, a marks system was already in use in working hunter pony classes.

“It was in discussion with the late Jim McTiffin – vice chairman of the BSPS [British Show Pony Society] at the time – about the number of complaints about judging at HOYS qualifiers that I simply asked if there were complaints about working hunter pony results. If not, why not use marks in flat classes, too?” Tom later set the seed for a move to a marks system by proposing the idea at the BSPS Scotland AGM and the BSPS judges’ conference.

Homes in the county 32 Tangle tamers Make it easy to brush manes and tails with these products FEATURES 34 Marks of success Does this showing format work? 40 Catch the drift How to stop horses drifting sideways over fences HUNTING 44 A Glittering triumph A day with the Morpeth West Percy 48 Rural packs bridge the gap Hounds in the Community week REPORTS 50 Eventing Poplar Park and Portugal 52 Dressage Wellington Riding, Moreton and more 54 Showjumping Arena UK and Kelsall Hill EC 58 Racing Sandown 60 Point-to-point Duke of Beaufort’s and Buccleuch CLASSIFIED ADS 62 Horseboxes and more COVER Izzy Hartswood- Collier pilots Beech Hall Ryan, Royal International supreme pony in 2023.

Credit: Elli Birch/Boots and Hooves Vetting issues THE 34th National Equine Forum (news, p4) was again a great meeting of industry minds highlighting the biggest issues. Dr June Fanning, chief veterinary officer for Ireland, demonstrated the benefit of “not wasting a crisis”. By timelining the actions taken after terrible scenes came to light in footage from an abattoir in 2024, she proved what can be done in a short time for the good of the horse. The most compelling panel discussion was that between vets and a horse dealer, Julie Martin.

Julie detailed how horse sales are down where more horses are being deemed unsuitable for their intended purpose at vetting, or the buyer walks away due to insurance exclusions even if the horse is deemed suitable. The system also puts untenable pressure on vets, who face litigation if something is “missed”. The solution? For buyers to appreciate there is no “perfect”, and that a clean bill of health today doesn’t guarantee an ailment-free experience?

Responsibility also goes to buyers to ensure they are considering their riding ability and all management factors – these will change the horse from the one they rode at the seller’s yard.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
