Notice that each item on Charlie’s list is specific and measurable. For example, he could have an agent he loves, but without defining “loves” he could convince himself that an agent half-assing would suffice. Here he specifies he wants nothing less than monthly appointments. Once your list is as comprehensive as possible, the next step is to collect the goals of highest priority and pare away those of less importance.

Life is short, and we only have so many hours in our day. Below are two ways to go about this process. List and pen In this method you grab a pen or pencil and form a list of goals in no particular order. Step 1: Pick five goals. Circle the ones that stand out as paramount among the others.

Step 2: Cut twelve or so. Go through the remaining uncircled items and cross out about half. As you pass over your circled highest priorities, ask yourself, “Is this as important as that?” Be ruthless! Step 3: Win some and lose some. Circle a few more keepers and cut out half of what remains. Step 4: A final look. Without adding more, pit what’s left on the chopping block against what’s been circled.

“Lindsay Mendez and Ryan Scott Oliver run a great class in auditioning and performing for musical theatre, and beyond that, they have a ton of experience, both happy and not-so-happy, in the business of making a career in musical theatre.
