I don\u2019t expect you to understand, but she is different.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room filled with tension and anticipation. Every eye fixed on him as he nervously shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He watched the faces before him, and his words hung in the room, as if inviting a dissenting reply. The clock in the hall grew louder with each passing second. Darcy saw an uncommon fire in his friend\u2019s eyes and noted his hands clenching and releasing then repeating the action.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, what are you going to do?\u201d he asked. \u201cWill Miss Bennet receive your usual treatment of admiration from afar? Or can you find the courage to approach and ask her if she wants your attention?\u201d \u201cYou make it sound so easy.\u201d Bingley swallowed, casting his eyes from Darcy to Caroline.<\/p>\n

His shoulders drooped, and he licked his lips once, then twice. \u201cWhat if she doesn\u2019t view me as a suitor? Miss Bennet\u2019s father was a gentleman, and I am not, nor can I ever claim that distinction. She is liable to laugh at my arrogance and reject me, then tell her friends about my foolish attempt.\u201d He walked through the entrance and into the hall, leaving Darcy to call after him. \u201cOr she could welcome your sincere flattery and encourage your efforts. If you allow fear to control your life, you\u2019ll never know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Darcy followed Bingley to the entrance. Reeves moved to let them out of the house, but his master clutched the handle and wrenched it open. He walked through the doorway, nodding to the bewildered servant. \u201cMy supposed friend here has put me in a mood, and I needed the fresh air. I promise to regain control of myself before I return and won\u2019t interfere with the performance of your duties.\u201d<\/p>\n

The butler gave a quick bow and retreated into the house, leaving the friends alone. \u201cFear is not the problem. Don\u2019t forget, my father earned his fortune from the trades.<\/p>\n
