And I didn’t want to drag it out any longer than it needed to be. Alright, the helmet was cool. I’d give Will that. But the bike was no Diamondback! Still, it also wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Even though it weighed a ton, it rode decently.

In the end, the bike wasn’t the problem. It was me. “Want to race?” I asked, goading Theo on. He shot me a glance, his brow furrowed. “Don’t tempt me, buddy. I can’t race without getting competitive, you know that.” “Good. ’Cause I was serious,” I said with a touch of a grin. “Let’s get it back on.” Theo scoffed at me. “Listen, we don’t need to race. We can just ride together. I’m fine with that, seriously. Besides, I told your mom that I would —” “I know, I know.

But I want to push myself. If we don’t race, I’m just gonna take it easy. Too easy.” Theo shook his head. I don’t think he liked the idea, but I knew he couldn’t turn down a good competition. “On your mark, get set—” I pedaled as hard as I could before yelling. “Hey, that’s cheating!” But sure enough, Theo took the bait. He shot off like a lightning bolt. And that was exactly what I needed. Someone to drive me on. To push me. Something to get my adrenaline running again—and sure enough, it did!

I didn’t slow down. I pedaled with everything I had! The bike performed well. It didn’t have toeclips, so I wasn’t getting the maximum uplift on the swing. Yet there was enough momentum that the pedal continued around every time. I had no difficulty keeping up my speed with one leg. Everything was working. And the auto-balance held me upright. I even kept up with Theo.

At least for a little. But then I started to slow. And soon enough, I lagged behind. Farther. And farther! I was huffing and puffing. Where did my stamina go? What was wrong with me?! Had my muscles atrophied that much? Had they gotten weaker in only three months’ time?! Why couldn’t I push harder? Why wasn’t I back to where I used to be?! In the end, the bike did not fail me. I failed me.

© 2024 by Jar of Lightning All rights reserved.
