We had a long journey ahead. And I didn\u2019t want to drag it out any longer than it needed to be. Alright, the helmet was cool. I\u2019d give Will that. But the bike was no Diamondback! Still, it also wasn\u2019t as bad as it could have been. Even though it weighed a ton, it rode decently.<\/p>\n

In the end, the bike wasn\u2019t the problem. It was me. \u201cWant to race?\u201d I asked, goading Theo on. He shot me a glance, his brow furrowed. \u201cDon\u2019t tempt me, buddy. I can\u2019t race without getting competitive, you know that.\u201d \u201cGood. \u2019Cause I was serious,\u201d I said with a touch of a grin. \u201cLet\u2019s get it back on.\u201d Theo scoffed at me. \u201cListen, we don\u2019t need to race. We can just ride together. I\u2019m fine with that, seriously. Besides, I told your mom that I would \u2014\u201d \u201cI know, I know.<\/p>\n

But I want to push myself. If we don\u2019t race, I\u2019m just gonna take it easy. Too easy.\u201d Theo shook his head. I don\u2019t think he liked the idea, but I knew he couldn\u2019t turn down a good competition. \u201cOn your mark, get set\u2014\u201d I pedaled as hard as I could before yelling. \u201cHey, that\u2019s cheating!\u201d But sure enough, Theo took the bait. He shot off like a lightning bolt. And that was exactly what I needed. Someone to drive me on. To push me. Something to get my adrenaline running again\u2014and sure enough, it did!<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t slow down. I pedaled with everything I had! The bike performed well. It didn\u2019t have toeclips, so I wasn\u2019t getting the maximum uplift on the swing. Yet there was enough momentum that the pedal continued around every time. I had no difficulty keeping up my speed with one leg. Everything was working. And the auto-balance held me upright. I even kept up with Theo.<\/p>\n

At least for a little. But then I started to slow. And soon enough, I lagged behind. Farther. And farther! I was huffing and puffing. Where did my stamina go? What was wrong with me?! Had my muscles atrophied that much? Had they gotten weaker in only three months\u2019 time?! Why couldn\u2019t I push harder? Why wasn\u2019t I back to where I used to be?! In the end, the bike did not fail me. I failed me.<\/p>\n
