I didn\u2019t see a car in the driveway, so I thought he must be gone somewhere. I had read in the newspaper that Iris\u2019s funeral was the next day. I didn\u2019t think Alec and I could show up to it, since we hadn\u2019t really known her well. \u201cWow, Hilda must be in good shape to climb these every day,\u201d Lucy panted. Her foot slipped and she grabbed tighter to the railing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoa.\u201d \u201cBe careful,\u201d I said, looking over my shoulder. \u201cThe snow doesn\u2019t help. I\u2019d have taken a tumble down them by now.\u201d I stood with my hand poised to knock on the door and it flew open. \u201cOh!\u201d I nearly squealed. \u201cHello, Hilda, I-we were in the neighborhood and we thought we\u2019d stop by.\u201d Hilda squinted her eyes and leaned past me to get a look at Lucy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my friend Lucy Gray. We uh, brought you a pie,\u201d I said indicating the shopping bag I had on my arm. I had one hand on the landing railing and suddenly felt a little queasy at the stair height. I wasn\u2019t good with heights and this garage apartment suddenly seemed terribly high.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi,\u201d Lucy said, still clutching the railing. \u201cOh say, don\u2019t I know you? You worked at the library for a while, didn\u2019t you? And the bank?\u201d Lucy was an avid reader and user of the public library, but I had no idea Hilda had ever worked there. Hilda took a step back. \u201cI\u2019ve worked both places. You like John Grisham, don\u2019t you?\u201d \u201cWow, you have quite the memory,\u201d Lucy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been years since you\u2019ve worked there, hasn\u2019t it?\u201d \u201cIt has,\u201d Hilda agreed. She still had a very somber look on her face and I wasn\u2019t sure she would let us in. Then she suddenly took another step back and held the door open. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you come in?\u201d We followed her into the apartment. \u201cI love what you\u2019ve done with this place,\u201d Lucy said, following me in.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m so sorry about your daughter. What a terrible tragedy.\u201d \u201cThank you,\u201d Hilda said. \u201cI still can\u2019t believe it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n

I had enjoyed spending Christmas with my mother in my hometown of Goose Bay Alabama, but my daughter Jennifer and I had come too close to becoming murder victims. Darn those fresh buttermilk biscuits slathered in butter and homemade strawberry jam. But a girl\u2019s gotta do what a girl\u2019s gotta do, and now I was paying the price. \u201cI have the best idea ever,\u201d Alec said, as we finished our run and headed inside my house. \u201cDo tell,\u201d I said and took a seat on the bench located along a wall inside my mud porch.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
