“Agreed. Sterling, set Sarah up in one of the spare rooms. Make sure she’s got everything she needs. Condor, I want you to monitor for any chatter about Ava or her investigation. If someone’s making moves, I want to know about it before they get close.” Everyone disperses to their assignments, leaving me alone with Ice Pick and Sarah.<\/p>\n

My roommate’s watching him with wide eyes, clearly trying to reconcile the dangerous biker with the man who’s apparently keeping me safe. “So you two are…” she trails off, looking between us. “Together,” Ice Pick supplies. “And before you ask, yes, I know it’s complicated. No, I don’t care.” “I was going to ask if he’s the reason you’ve been ignoring my calls for a week, but that works too.”<\/p>\n

Sarah turns to me. “Ava Langley, dating an outlaw biker. Never thought I’d see the day.” “I’m not dating him. We’re just…” I pause, realizing I don’t actually know what to call what we are. “It’s complicated.” “Complicated how? You’re sleeping with him, right?” “Sarah.” “What? I’m just trying to understand the situation.”<\/p>\n

She grins despite everything. “And honestly, if I were trapped in an MC compound, I’d probably jump the hot Sergeant-at-Arms too.” Ice Pick’s mouth twitches. “I like her. She’s got good taste.” “Don’t encourage her.” But I’m smiling too, grateful for the moment of levity. “Come on, let’s get you settled. You look like you haven’t slept in days.” I show Sarah to the room Sterling’s prepared, helping her get comfortable and answering her increasingly concerned questions about what I’ve gotten myself into.<\/p>\n

By the time I leave her to rest, it’s nearly dinner time and the common room’s filled with brothers grabbing food and beer. Ice Pick finds me near the kitchen, pulling me aside with a hand on my lower back that’s become familiar over the past few days. “Your friend’s safe. Sterling’s got eyes on her room, and Zip’s running checks to make sure she wasn’t followed.” His thumb traces circles on my spine.<\/p>\n

“How’re you holding up?” “Honestly? I’m furious. They went after Sarah to get to me. She’s got nothing to do with this except being unlucky enough to share an apartment with me.” I lean into his touch. “I need to finish this. Need to identify whoever’s pulling the strings and make sure they can’t hurt anyone else.”<\/p>\n

he clubhouse reeks of stale beer, leather, and the lingering smoke from last night’s party. I lean against the bar, watching my watching my brothers move through the space with swagger and ease. The women move through it too; club whores perched on barstools or leaning against my brothers trying to get their attention, laughing, watching, choosing who they sit beside. None of them look afraid. That matters. Tess\u2019s rules echo even when she\u2019s not in the room. Tess is Vulture\u2019s ol\u2019 lady, she runs the club whores to make sure they don\u2019t overstep and that there\u2019s no bullying or getting out of hand.<\/p>\n

Since Tess took over looking after the club whores it’s been a lot more peaceful in here. Every inch of this compound, every road we ride, every deal we make, it’s ours, and that includes the club whores too. The Saints Outlaws MC didn’t build an empire by playing nice.<\/p>\n

“Ice Pick.” Vulture’s voice cuts through the noise. It’s sharp and commanding. Our President doesn’t raise his voice often. He doesn’t need to. We respect him. We fear him a little too. Vulture didn\u2019t earn his name by accident. He survived long enough to learn that power wasn\u2019t about noise; it was about what you protected, and what you were willing to burn for it. I push off the bar and cross the room, my boots heavy on the scarred wooden floor.<\/p>\n

Vulture stands near the pool table where Zip and Rook are pretending they’re not listening. Sterling’s nursing a beer in the corner, his eyes tracking everything as always. Our Chaplain doesn’t miss shit. Knox, our club doc, leans in a doorway nearby, bandaging up one of the prospects with his usual deadpan calm. Digger sits on the stool like he\u2019s trying not to breathe wrong, his eyes flicking to me every few seconds like approval might be handed out with the gauze.<\/p>\n

“What’s up?” I ask, folding my arms across my chest. Vulture jerks his head toward the back office. “We need to talk. Now.” I follow him through the maze of brothers and club whores until we’re in the relative quiet of his office.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
