Additional elements like haptic feedback devices and spatial audio are sometimes employed to enhance the sense of immersion. These technologies will be described in details later in this chapter when we talk about the key technologies behind VR. Rather than merely overlaying new visuals onto our field of vision, authentic VR crafts an interactive simulated space.

It employs AI, sensors and algorithms to align the virtual realm with the physical world, tricking the mind into believing it has entered an entirely different setting. 7.2.5 Types of Virtual Realities As we discussed earlier, Virtual Reality devices (like wearable headsets) work on the principle of immersing the users in a digital experience by using a combination of sensors, Artificial Intelligence, software and hardware.

However, the level of immersion differs based on the application. The VR devices can be categorised into four main types based on the immersion level and their field of use. Non-immersive VR This is the earliest form of VR. Though the name suggests that this type of VR is not immersive (contrary to the definition of VR which mentions that all VR technologies are immersive), what it actually means is that the level of immersion is very fundamental.

There is no scope for using spatial computing features, such as sensory experience, gesture controls, etc., but the user can move certain characters in the environment through controllers. Thus, the user is not immersed in that environment. For example, a driving simulator has controls like a steering wheel and a pedal, using which a user can interact with the environment similar to a real car, but the user won’t use any headset and won’t feel an immersive experience during simulation.

Semi-Immersive VR This VR technology is very similar to ‘mixed reality’. The digital components are projected on top of real objects or environments and users can have a partial sense of immersion.

Pearson is the world’s learning company, with presence across 70 countries worldwide. OceanofPDF.com WHAT INDUSTRY AND ACADEMIC EXPERTS SAY ABOUT THIS BOOK … This book provides a comprehensive and modern perspective on Industry 4.0, highlighting its integration with emerging technologies like AI, Blockchain, and cybersecurity measures.

The authors offer valuable insights into the transition from traditional lean systems to smart, agile practices enabled by IoT, AI, supporting real-time waste reduction, predictive maintenance, and digital supply chains tailored for customization and adaptability. What sets this book apart is its practical approach, featuring real-world applications and in-depth case studies across industries that show how various technologies can be effectively combined to build smart manufacturing frameworks. Unlike many books that focus on isolated aspects, this work presents the full scope of Industry 4.0, including future trends and selection strategies for different manufacturing contexts.

It is a timely and insightful contribution, useful for both industry professionals and students. As a standardization expert, I also see its potential in guiding standardized approaches for smart manufacturing. Congratulations to the authors, Saikat Dutt, Arindam Ray, and Sobhan Sen Sarma, for their thoughtful and thorough work. —Anupam Kaul Founder and Lead, Veriti Masters Guild Chair, BIS, National Standards Committee on Quality Management & Basic Service Standards I am very happy to learn that the authors have taken the great initiative to introduce and explain the various aspects of Industry 4.0 (the fourth industrial revolution) to the professional and student community.

Industry 4.0 optimises the computerisation of Industry 3.0. There is hardly any good literature on this topic that explains the concepts and recommendations lucidly. This book will serve as a strong guide. The book starts with a lucid introduction followed by explaining all nine tenets that include: Industry IoT, Robotics, 3-D Printing, Cloud Computing, Big Data Analytics, Blockchain, Cybersecurity and so on.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
