Because the e-Home caregiving ecosystem needs role-based access control, the consensus algorithm used for the blockchain is proof of identity. The private key of the user that is associated with a particular transaction serves as proof of identification.

The greatest match for role-based private permission categories is for every recognized user from a blockchain system to be able to construct a block of data that is available to any person on the network (depending on their role). Data integrity and authenticity are guaranteed by the confirmation of identity. The agree- ment method used by e-Home caregiving allows the comparison of the private keys of authorized carers to an approved identity.

In this section, system architecture and the data crowdsourcing incentive mechanism are discussed. 5.4.1 System Architecture In this section, the functioning of the diabetes monitoring system is discussed. The objective is to build a platform for smart diabetic self-care and monitoring. The bene- fit of utilizing IoT is that it makes data collection easier and automates data exchange. However, the platform uses blockchain security and smart contracts to guarantee authenticity, consistency, secrecy, and traceability. This would help patients com- pletely control their data.

In addition to keeping track of the data that has been accessed, they would be able to define permissions and access rules. The problem with this combination of IoT with blockchain is that self-care med- ical equipment has limited storage and processing capabilities. They are therefore difficult to incorporate into a blockchain architecture. Normally, it is not supported for a light client installation to function as a node in the blockchain network.

To send data from sensors to the blockchain, some works suggested using a gateway as a node. It is still difficult to safeguard the link between the patient’s gadgets and the gateway, though. A malicious third party could, for instance, add devices to convey fraudulent information or harm the gateway. On this level, emphasis is placed on increasing security.

The book acts as a guide, taking the reader into the smart system domain and providing theoretical and practical knowledge along with case studies in smart healthcare. The book uses a blend of interdisciplinary approaches such as IoT, blockchain, augmented reality, and virtual reality for the implementation of cost-effective, real-time, and user-friendly solutions for healthcare problems. Immersive Virtual and Augmented Reality in Healthcare: An IoT and Blockchain Perspective presents the trends, best practices, techniques, developments, sensors, materials, and case studies that are using augmented and virtual reality environments with the state-of-the-art latest technologies like IoT, blockchain, and machine learning in the implementation of healthcare systems.

The book focuses on the design and implementation of smart healthcare systems with major challenges to further explore more robust and efficient healthcare solutions in terms of low cost, faster algorithms, more sensitive IoT sensors, faster data communication, and real-time solutions for treatment. It discusses the use of virtual and augmented reality and how it can provide user-friendly and interactive communication within healthcare systems.

Illustrated through case studies, the book conveys how different hospitals and healthcare equipment providers can adopt good practices found in the book to improve the performance/productivity of their staff and system. The content is rounded out by providing how IoT, blockchain, and artificial intelligence can provide the framework for designing and/or upgrading traditional healthcare systems by increasing security and data privacy.

A valuable resource for engineers working with systems, the healthcare professionals involved in the design and development of healthcare devices and systems, researcher scholars, multidisciplinary scientists, students, and academics who are wishing to explore the use of virtual and augmented reality in new and existing healthcare systems. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN SMART HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS Series Editors: Vishal Jain and Jyotir Moy Chatterjee The progress of the healthcare sector is incremental as it learns from associations between data over time through the application of suitable big data and IoT frameworks and patterns.

Many healthcare service providers are employing IoT-enabled devices for monitoring patient health care, but their diagnosis and prescriptions are instance-specific only. However, these IoT-enabled healthcare devices are generating volumes of data (Big-IoT Data), that can be analyzed for more accurate diagnosis and prescriptions. A major challenge in the above realm is the effective and accurate learning of unstructured clinical data through the application of precise algorithms. Incorrect input data leading to erroneous outputs with false positives shall be intolerable in healthcare as patient’s lives are at stake.

This book series addresses various aspects of how smart healthcare can be used to detect and analyze diseases, the underlying methodologies, and related security concerns.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
