On May 12, four men, including her own brother, were put on trial, falsely accused of having sexual relations with her. On May 15, Anne was accused of adultery, incest and high treason, and two days later her brother and the other men were executed. Henry commuted Anne’s sentence from burning to beheading and brought a swordsman from France, rather than use a common ax. On the morning of her execution, Anne sent for the Constable of the Tower, who wrote: “And in the writing of this she sent for me, and at my coming she said, ‘Mr.

Kingston, I hear I shall not die afore noon, and I am very sorry therefore, for I thought to be dead by this time and past my pain.’ I told her it should be no pain, it was so little. And then she said, ‘I heard say the executioner was very good, and I have a little neck,’ and then put her hands about it, laughing heartily.”

She then climbed the scaffold and made a short speech to the crowd: “Good Christian people, I am come hither to die, for according to the law, and by the law I am judged to die, and therefore I will speak nothing against it. I am come hither to accuse no man, nor to speak anything of that, whereof I am accused and condemned to die, but I pray God save the king and send him long to reign over you, for a gentler nor a more merciful prince was there never: and to me he was ever a good, a gentle and sovereign lord.

And if any person will meddle of my cause, I require them to judge the best. And thus I take my leave of the world and of you all, and I heartily desire you all to pray for me. O Lord have mercy on me, to God I commend my soul.” 1508–October 24, 1537 “Here lies Jane, a phoenix Who died in giving another phoenix birth. Let her be mourned, for birds like these Are rare indeed.” Jane Seymour’s epitaph in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Palace Jane was the third wife of Henry VIII, but she never gave up her Roman Catholic faith.

Because of this she tried to have Henry’s eldest child, Mary Tudor, brought to court and made heir to the throne behind any children that Jane might have with Henry. She also sought clemency for the ringleaders of the Pilgrimage of Grace, thus earning the king’s anger.

New York • London © 2010 by Terry Breverton All rights reserved.
