No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening — it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. Hebrews 12:10-11 There’s a big difference between punishment and discipline. Punishment is intended to be punitive, to make the person pay for wrong. All who are in Christ need never fear that their suffering is a result of being punished for sin.

How do we know that? Because Christ has already been punished for our sin, so we don’t have to be. But discipline is different. Discipline is purposeful. Discipline is something a loving father does. The writer of Hebrews tells us, “the Lorn disciplines those he loves” and, “No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening — it’s painful” (Hebrews 12:6, 11).

“… endure this divine discipline,” the writer encourages. “God’s discipline is always good for us” (Hebrews 12:7, 10). God is the perfect parent. His discipline is never too harsh or inappropriate. We do not always know how best to discipline our children, but God does. He always knows and does what is right.

Obviously, experiencing discipline doesn’t feel good at the time. It feels like hardship and loss and pain. But we can endure his discipline in our lives because while it’s painful, we’re confident it’s purposeful. God’s purpose in disciplining us is that we might “share in his holiness.” God wants his children to bear the family resemblance.

He wants us to live in a way that demonstrates that we share the passions and priorities of our Father. When we are willing to be trained by his discipline — to be molded and shaped by it — something beautiful happens. Something blossoms in our lives — a peaceful harvest of right living. Prayer Heavenly Father, we never grow beyond our need for your loving discipline.

So, keep loving by disciplining in the way that only you can. But please, be gentle. Give the grace to endure your divine discipline and give the joy of experiencing a peaceful harvest of right living as increasingly shares in your holiness. ————. Im praying Hebrews 12 for you today, asking your heavenly Father to be gentle with you as he works in and through the suffering in your life to discipline you toward increasingly sharing in his holiness.

fans oa) peu 49 eo) uf) \\ LA, “ay ; Wh ae bee bee ¢ “ay Maat’ » | al | , ( ch tas h j gee, RO vine a AN Ge j ia é } ) ¥ q } ‘ fis ¥ ~ im 1 ih ‘ ; jae’ ef R We yee t : oo a Laid 4 iter oii ae hig die yin ” ¥ , ri . a .

“When I lie awake through the night watches, I earnestly pray for friends who are suffering greatly.
