Outside her apartment, a crowd of people stood, waiting for her.<\/p>\n

There were news vans parked down the street and reporters and camera crews on the sidewalk outside the lobby. She didn\u2019t have the energy to face it all. \u201cTake me around the back and through the alley,\u201d Mia told him as she dug in her purse for keys. Please let the basement door key be on there, she prayed. It was.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want me to walk you up?\u201d \u201cNo. I need to do this myself.\u201d Mia\u2019s legs were wobbly as she got out of the car. \u201cThank you, Richard.\u201d \u201cMia, don\u2019t talk to them again unless I\u2019m with you. You should have called me right away, you know.\u201d \u201cI was so scared. I didn\u2019t think of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In truth she thought she would be safe with Nick. Just the thought was like getting punched in the stomach. \u201cI\u2019m turning off my cell and unplugging my house phone. I will call you in a couple of days to see how this is going to affect the business.\u201d \u201cOkay,\u201d Richard nodded. Mia ran down the cement steps and faced the solid steel door which led to the basement.<\/p>\n

She put the key in and tried to turn it, but it wouldn\u2019t budge. \u201cOh, no.\u201d She tried again and again. Finally, on the fourth try, it gave and just in time. She could hear people\u2019s voices coming up the alley. \u201cI saw that car turn in here,\u201d a man said.<\/p>\n

Mia pulled the door open as quietly as she could and stepped inside. She closed it the same way.<\/p>\n
