By this time, Alice had stopped shivering and her eyes were closed. She was still—too still. All he wanted to do was take her in his arms and reassure her that everything would be fine, but that was not to happen. He was in too much pain to even carry her.

As it was, he’d had to drag the Histri’i into his house, laying him out on a mattress he pulled from his storeroom into the main room. With Alice, he was able to rouse her and coax her to help herself off the sled, though she looked around at the familiar surroundings of his compound covered by snow with a blank expression in her beautiful eyes. Unseeing, she allowed him to lead her without any resistance into his house, going to her corner like one walking in her sleep.

He didn’t stop her from curling up on her mattress, pulling her blanket up over her head and shutting out the world. She’d been so out of it that he was surprised when she came up to him a little later, after he’d set the broken bones he could feel on the Histri’i. He’d put aside the bandages and was stoking the fire in the stove to boil up the herbal broth that would rapidly advance his and the Histri’i’s healing.

Alice wordlessly took the wood chunk from him to feed the stove. As she reached for a second piece from the woodpile beside the stove, she said something to him in her soft voice, motioning for him to rest on his mattress with her other hand, gesturing that she could finish up boiling the pan of broth. He was ashamed that his pained groans had probably woken her out of a much-needed rest. She had removed most of the layers of clothes, and her face was fully bared now.

Dark circles bruised the pale skin beneath her eyes, and deep lines were etched into her normally smooth features. He wasn’t an expert on facial expressions, but he could see that she was exhausted, and though not physically hurt, she was aching inside. He’d failed to protect her from this trauma, and yet, rather than blame him, she was trying to take care of him, when it should be the other way around.

When he refused to relinquish the broth to her, she raised her voice, pointing with a sharper gesture towards his bed. Her mouth was bent down in a displeased expression, and she practically growled at him. He’d seen anger from a female before, but never from this one.

Copyright © 2018 by Susan Trombley Copyright © 2019 by Susan Trombley for 1st revised edition All rights reserved. She cautiously approached Evie, who continued to try to pound the over-full rucksack into what little space remained in the trunk after the addition of a full-sized spare tire, two topped-off cans of gasoline, and enough camping gear to last until doomsday.

“You expecting an apocalypse?” “I need to get away. Now! No,” Evie paused as if thinking, though she still had yet to face Alice, “Now’s too late. I need to get away yesterday.” She started unlatching the rucksack. “I wonder if Dad managed to pack a time machine in here. Sure would have been useful.” Alice was really worried now. The bug-out bag had been dutiful- ly checked and updated every year as their father had insisted on them doing even after his death.

But no one took it out of the closet with the intent of using it. It was for when the world went crazy— when “shit hit the fan,” as their father would say. As far as Alice was concerned, the world had already passed that boundary many times over and there’d still been no need for such desperate measures.

It was simply a last remnant of the stern, distant father they’d loved so much that it almost made up for the fact that he probably hadn’t loved them. He’d been too busy preparing for an apocalypse that cancer made sure he wouldn’t live to see. Missing doomsday had been his final disappointment.

“Evie, please stop packing the car with Daddy’s memories and turn around and talk to me. I know you’re upset. I heard about what happened with Jarrett. The police will track him down and get your money back. Don’t let that low-down, dirty conman chase you away from your home.”

Evie spun to face Alice.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
