You will find fortune tellers and those who speak to the dead in period films, coffee cup readings in Arab cinema, and tarot card readings on television. Note: seers are often portrayed as blind, in a fairly on—the—nose statement of the power of oracular sight.

Don’t get me wrong: the psychic who taps into these archetypes remains; you’ll find plenty who put on a show. They connect to all of your guides, angels, ascended masters, past lives, high councils in galaxies far, far aw— you get the idea. There is no denying that for many it is simply a party trick, a bit of amusement stemming from curiosity. It’s interesting then, that readers and psychics now have to place disclaimers that what they are saying is for entertainment purposes only.

The new crop of readers with channels on YouTube (just look up ‘Pick a card reading’) state this below every video. But these are also promotional videos for their businesses, with many becoming a kind of sensation in the New Age space. I challenge you to watch a few and not get a little hooked, or to not find something that does resonate with you, even just a little.

That’s cosmic chemistry right there — getting that message just when you need it. Some of the readers really know their tools, and I have admittedly lost hours to listening to them unpack stories for the ‘collective’ (meaning a bunch of people, not one person). If you’re wanting to learn how to use tarot and oracle cards, these can offer some valuable lessons. It might also be a way to find a reader you like if you want to get a psychic reading because it’s like one big cyber psychic den.

But I would be careful with using collective readings as therapy; it’s not personal to you, and they are not counsellors. You could end up doing your head in with confirmation bias (where things happen that simply confirm an existing belief) or wishing for their findings to be true. After all, most of the readings are about things like twin flames (aka ‘soul mates’), past lives, or when you’re going to make money.

You might resonate with a collective reading, but it’s a bit like fast food — quick and easy, but bad for you if consumed too often. Despite all of the scepticism directed at psychics and mediums, the industry around divination and intuition is booming. An IBISWorld report shows that in the US, the psychic services industry (card readings, palmistry, astrology, aura readings and mediumship) has seen steady growth in the five years to 2019, attributing the trend to an improved economy and ‘growing acceptance of industry services among consumers’.

It projected revenue upwards of $2.2 billion for that period.

Fridays with My Folks Some Girls Do . . .
