He fell asleep quickly, mut- tering in his sleep as his eyes flickered, telling me he was dreaming. I stayed awake for a while, his words running around my head on a loop. It\u2019s not the gunshot that hurts, little bird. I hated how much pain I\u2019d caused him. Why couldn\u2019t he just give me a minute to gather my thoughts and I could have told him that, despite everything\u2014our past, the years that had passed, what I\u2019d accused him of\u2014I still had feelings for him, and I wanted to be with him.<\/p>\n

But now, well, now, I had to move on. Although, how was that possible when my heart belonged to him, and my past was chasing me like a ghost? Eventually, I let my eyes close and sleep stole my thoughts. I woke with a start, struggling to breathe. I panicked that some- one had got to me, but then I remembered that I was in Thomas Lanton\u2019s house, so that would be impossible. My eyes adjusted to the blackness of the room and I tried to scream as I found Sean strad- dling me, his hand around my throat.<\/p>\n

Even in the low light of the room, I could see the vacant look in his eyes as he stared at the wall as if he was seeing something other than me. I tried to call out his name and shake him from his night terror, but his grip robbed me of my voice. The air grew thin, and I bucked my hips, trying to wriggle out of his hold, but he didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

I curled my fists and pummelled his chest. I even pushed on his gunshot wound, hoping the pain would break his trance-like state, but nothing worked. As the edges of my vision darkened, I reached out, grabbing the lamp from next to the bed and smashing it against the wall. But it still had no effect on him. Instead, he wrapped his other hand around my neck, baring down so hard I waited for my windpipe to crumble.<\/p>\n
