I hoped she’d be thankful for my efforts and for trying to protect her from a murderer and a liar. It would be a good way to pay her back for everything she’d done for me over the years.

Mama was home already, thankfully, and I burst through the front door, startling her as she sat knitting quietly in the sitting room. “Oh, Sadie, please be easy on those hinges. They’ve gotten rusty, and I’m not sure if we’ll be able to replace them anytime soon.” “Sorry, I’ll be more careful.” I gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek and raced to my room to change into my boots.

“Where are you headed? You just got home!” Mama shouted. “The square! There’s a sale on the pretzels, and I planned to get a few extra for Lander while they’re still hot,” I shouted back, out of breath from running the entire way home. It wasn’t exactly a lie. There was a sale advertised earlier in the week, and I did plan to grab him some extras. After tying my boots, I made sure to put my hair up, wrapping the braid into a tight bun at the nape of my neck.

After deciding that I had everything together, I washed my face, hoping the cool water would calm my nerves. My reflection stared back at me in the mirror, those pesky purple bags still underneath my eyes. I hadn’t realized my cheeks had become so gaunt, from the stress and lack of proper eating, no doubt. Despite this, there was something different in my eyes: Hope.

I was hopeful that we could save Mama from Thamus, hopeful that we could figure out what the city was hiding. There was plenty to uncover, and Lander and I were on the verge of possibly reaching that goal. What if the virus wasn’t as risky as they said? Surely it wasn’t, given that we receive goods from the outside. And the world. Oh, to see the world beyond the peaks. Lander said it was unlike anything you could ever imagine, that the paintings and descriptions didn’t do it justice.

Young as I was when we came to Ancthia, I barely remembered anything other than the small town in the woods where I was born. But Lander, he lived by the sea, a force that gave a lasting impression, no matter how young. Lander said that standing by water so vast made everything appear ridiculously small in comparison, its undulating movements giving the impression that the water itself was alive.

It sent wave after wave crashing against soft sand, pushing and pulling with a strength that even the largest ships couldn’t resist.

No part of this publication may be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical methods, without the prior written permission of the publisher, except as permitted by U.S. copyright law. Only for a second, though!” I shouted, the front door bouncing off the wall as I raced into the house. “Why are you late, Sadie?” Mama stood in the kitchen, hands on her hips. Dinner had clearly been sitting out for quite some time on the table. Food that I knew was hard to come by. I abruptly paused the trek toward my room, guiltily chewing on my lip in response, fiercely avoiding eye contact.

“What did you do this time?” Mama huffed, slapping the towel she’d been holding onto the counter. We only had to scrub the bathroom floor.” “It doesn’t take that long to scrub a bathroom floor,” Mama replied skeptically, “especially if Lander was scrubbing with you.” I admitted sheepishly, bracing for the blow of disappointment to finally land, “We had to use a toothbrush.”

Mama sighed heavily, pinching her nose with a shake of her head. Her lengthy brown hair rippled with the movement, matching the flow of her thick, long linen skirts. “If you get in trouble again, I’ll be the one making you scrub the bathroom floor with a toothbrush. Except this time, you’ll be using your toothbrush.” She narrowed her eyes at me. Gross. Not my own toothbrush.

She meant it too. “Yes, ma’am.” Her glare softened, and she reached out to gather me into a tight hug. “I love you.” “I love you, too, Mama.”

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
