When her contractions started, she gripped Mike’s hand and didn’t let go. “I can’t do this,” she whispered. “You can,” Mike said. “I’ve got you.” Every previous fight and pregnancy had been to prepare for this: without monsters to fight, he had to pull her pain into himself, deepening their connection as the challenging labor drew out. It\u2026 wasn\u2019t fun. Even with regeneration, the hours were beyond punishing.<\/p>\n

He found himself helping Shay heal through torment, and simultaneously providing the same aid to his children. Elven women weren\u2019t built to have triplets. Without the Lifeweb, he had zero doubt that there would have been tragedy. Under no circumstances was he going to allow that to happen.<\/p>\n

And he didn\u2019t, even as the shared pain had him on the ground, sweat pouring from every inch of his body, muscles shaking and his wellspring of vitality drained to near nothing. Seren did her best, working methodically, but not quickly. Relying on his healing, she chose to maximize the outcomes for the children and the mother. There was no cutting, no shattering of bone to make room.<\/p>\n

Just careful maneuvering that paid off when the first baby came. Purple and screaming, Thalia whisked him away to clean and bundle him while Seren reached for the second. “Piri,” Shay gasped. “The first one. His name is Piri.” The second baby came easier, a girl with dark hair and Shay’s nose. “Lox,” Shay said, sobbing now. “That’s Lox.” Finally, just when Mike was at the limit of every reserve, the third boy came.<\/p>\n

Smaller than his siblings, he wailed like a banshee. “Jace,” Shay whispered. “Oh, Fates. Jace.” She counted their fingers and toes through her tears, laughing and sobbing at the same time while Seren checked each one. All three healthy. All three perfect. Seven. * * * The settlement celebrated. Every birth drew crowds. Women clustered outside the quarters, waiting for the sound of a baby’s cry, and when it came, they cheered and wept and sang blessings that echoed off the new walls.<\/p>\n
