I heard noises from the wings: \u2018What the hell is going on?\u2019 Then the stage manager appeared and, in a very matter-of-fact manner, said, \u2018Come with me, young man.\u2019 And Jesus got escorted off the stage. After the show, I collared the stage manager. \u2018What happened to him?\u2019 I asked. \u2018Where is he? Is he OK?\u2019 \u2018Do you want to see?\u2019 he asked me. He led me to the door to the casino, opened it, and pointed.<\/p>\n

And there was Jesus, in the casino, playing craps. On that same States trip, I also recorded a CBS TV show, Here\u2019s Lucy. It was a sitcom starring Lucille Ball and was a follow-up to her long-running, very successful, I Love Lucy and The Lucy Show. And Lucille Ball was an amazing woman: slightly crazy, and a whirlwind force of nature. Lucille was the absolute boss on that show.<\/p>\n

She ruled the roost and was in charge of every single shot. She had a cast on her leg, which she kept whipping on and off as she filmed. Not even that could slow her down. She was unstoppable. My pregnancy was quite noticeable by this point, and Lucille reworked the script on the spot to accommodate this.<\/p>\n

And when she realised that not only did I have a French husband, but he was right there with me, she immediately demanded that he should be in the show, too. Claude wanted nothing to do with this. He had no interest in being on a television screen. He did what he did every time we went to a TV studio: grabbed one of their telephones and talked on it non-stop. This didn\u2019t bother Lucille, who was determined that Claude was to be part of the action.<\/p>\n

\u2018Where\u2019s the Frenchman?\u2019 Lucille would yell when it came to his part. \u2018He\u2019s on the phone,\u2019 the reply would come. And the technicians would roll their eyes, put down their equipment and go for a coffee while they waited for Claude to finish his call. Which could take forever. \u2018He doesn\u2019t want to do it,\u2019 I told Lucille. \u2018Can\u2019t you use some other Frenchman?\u2019 But she was having none of it: \u2018No way! It\u2019s got to be Claude!\u2019 She was adamant.<\/p>\n

Petula Clark is a singer, songwriter, actress and performer whose remarkable career spans more than eight decades \u2013 the longest of any British entertainer. She first stepped into the limelight as a child during WWII, singing to the troops on wartime radio and in concert, before appearing in a string of films. After a series of UK hit records in the 1950s, Petula followed her heart, and her future husband Claude Wolff, to France, where she became that country\u2019s most popular female vocalist.<\/p>\n

She then became an international superstar when she topped the charts for the first time in the US with Downtown in 1965. She has won two Grammy awards and has sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide. Petula has starred in Hollywood classic movies such as Finian’s Rainbow alongside Fred Astaire and Goodbye, Mr. Chips, with Peter O’Toole. Her stage work \u2013 on both sides of the Atlantic \u2013 includes long-running, critically acclaimed performances in The Sound of Music, Blood Brothers and Sunset Boulevard.<\/p>\n

She has also captivated audiences in concert halls and theatres around the world, performing for generations of devoted fans. She has received countless honours including a CBE in the UK for her services to music and drama, and in France, the rank of Commandeur des Arts et Lettres. She continues to perform and lives between Geneva and London.<\/p>\n
