If we can just get to his bike, we\u2019ll get out of here. He\u2019ll take me to the safe house, and then\u2026and then I can figure out what to do with my life in this new world of ours. Silas is true to his word. As soon as the trail flattens out, he sets me on my feet, makes sure I\u2019m steady, and then takes my hand and tugs me forward.<\/p>\n

He leads the way through the woods at a fast clip, navigating over rocks and tree roots with ease even in the dark. I put all my focus on following right behind him. It\u2019s that or panic, and he was right. There\u2019s no time to panic right now.<\/p>\n

That can come later. Right now we just have to keep moving forward, so that\u2019s what I do, my gaze fixed on Silas\u2019s broad shoulders as he guides us to safety. We spend an hour making our way through the dark woods before Silas leads us up the slope again. The house he approaches is in even worse condition than the ones in my neighborhood are: broken windows, back door hanging off its hinges, and a fallen tree that has caved in the roof on one side.<\/p>\n

I slow my steps as Silas approaches that broken back door, eyeing the tree. He glances back at me when he realizes I\u2019m lagging behind. \u201cHurry,\u201d he says, waving me forward. \u201cWe need to get under cover.\u201d That tree makes me nervous, but I trust Silas more than anyone else in the world right now.<\/p>\n

So I nod and follow him through the broken door, then wait just inside the threshold as he checks the rest of the house. \u201cIt\u2019s clear,\u201d he says when he returns a minute later. \u201cWe\u2019re okay here, for now.\u201d That\u2019s as good as it gets anymore, and it\u2019s enough for me to feel comfortable tucking my gun back into the holster I always keep at my hip, ready for easy access the instant I need it.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing in the kitchen, boss,\u201d a man says, and a boot stomps in response. \u201cCheck every drawer and cupboard you find,\u201d a second man says, his voice rougher and older than the first one. This one is the ringleader, from what I can tell, and I\u2019m pretty sure he\u2019s the one who stabbed Grady in the gut. \u201cClosets too. If there are meds in this house, I want \u2018em.\u201d \u201cYou got it,\u201d the first man answers, and his heavy footsteps retreat from the room again. \u201cYou won\u2019t\u2026find\u2026anything,\u201d Grady mumbles, his voice barely audible now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t\u2026keep meds here\u2026anymore.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t believe that for a second, Doc,\u201d the rough man says. \u201cJust like I don\u2019t believe your pretty wife left you. She\u2019s got to be hiding here somewhere.\u201d \u201cShe\u2019s\u2026not,\u201d Grady gasps. \u201cYou won\u2019t\u2026find her.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ll see about that,\u201d the man says, and another wave of panic washes through me.<\/p>\n

But that won\u2019t do me any good. I force myself to keep breathing slowly in through my nose and out through my mouth as silently as I can. This hiding spot has kept me alive twice before today, but if I can\u2019t keep quiet these men will find me in no time. And thanks to the graphic things they\u2019ve said to Grady over the last half hour, I know exactly what they\u2019d do to me if they got their hands on me.<\/p>\n

I would do anything to keep that from happening. Anything. But right now, all I can do is wait them out. And hope with everything in me that they don\u2019t look down. In another half hour, the man with the rough voice tells his companion that Grady is dead. But they don\u2019t leave. Instead they linger in our house for hours, tearing it apart in search of medicine that isn\u2019t here.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
