Hamas is not a one-track organization that lives by a mono- lithic vision with fundamentalist interests as many people assume; rather, it is an organization that has demonstrated a willingness to base its poli- cies on cost-benefit calculations to make a political understanding with Israel.123 According to Khaled Hroub, it would be nearly impossible to destroy Hamas because it is so deeply rooted, and even if it were to be destroyed, it would still reproduce among some percentage of the Palestinian population.

As Hamas has been dubbed “the most powerful Palestinian opposition force,” this likelihood of reproduction would con- tinue to exist for Hamas until some of the “bare minimum of Palestinian rights” is achieved.124 The complete eradication by Israel of a group that is so prevalent and powerful, with countries such as Iran providing sup- port and backing it, would be nearly impossible. Several peace-building theorists have agreed that complete annihilation of Hamas is impractical; rather, a more strategic modification of the demands of these proxy groups may be the key to achieving a peaceful settlement.

Hamas leader Musa Abu Marzuk has stated that they hope national unity talks succeed, but if the pact compromises the rights of Palestinians and if there are con- ditions on Palestinians principles, this will not be acceptable. Until a peaceful settlement is reached, Hamas continues to grow its base in Gaza and threaten the secular Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. Although less direct, Hamas also continues to threaten Jordan and Egypt, where a destabilized population is feared.125 More important, Hamas and Iran will continue to render any “traditional approaches to the Arab- Israeli conflict obsolete.”126 As for Hezbollah, “Death to America was, is, and will stay our slogan,” proclaims the group’s secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah.127 As Iran has steadily been heading toward a confrontation with Israel, Iran will likely continue aiding Hezbollah to ensure that a strategic response would result if Israel were to take action.128 While at the same time Israel is concerned pri- marily with Palestinian terror, it is also preparing its military for second- strike capability against Iran if the need should arise.129 If U.S.

Copyright 2011 by Jalil Roshandel All rights reserved.
