I\u2019m in the hall, headed back to my suite\u2014and my Kennedy\u2014when Kendrick finds me, hands in his pockets, squinting like he already knows some shit.<\/p>\n

I barely look at him, focusing instead on making sure everything is lined up perfectly. \u201cIt needed to be done,\u201d I shrug. \u201cYou doin\u2019 a lot for somebody who don\u2019t even know if they wanna be with you. This some singing in the rain with a boom box type shit.\u201d I pause my stack of perfection to side-eye him. \u201cAnd yet, yo\u2019 ass is standing here talking to me about it. Don’t you have some business to take care of?\u201d<\/p>\n

He gives me one last pointed look before disappearing. The sad thing is, he\u2019s not wrong. I am doing a lot for Kennedy. More than I should, considering I don\u2019t even know if she wants this to be something real, but I don\u2019t give a fuck. I want her and whatever it takes is what it takes. Lingering doubt creeps in and I wonder\u2014what if I\u2019m not what it takes? But I shake it off as quickly as I think it.<\/p>\n

If she showed no interest, that would be creepy as fuck, but her past is holding her back. I can see that now. I can\u2019t time travel to stop everything that hurt her, but I can do everything in my power to make sure she never feels alone again. While I\u2019m walking back, the event coordinator texts about the private dinner on the pier. How she got my number, I have no fucking clue, but now I\u2019m praising the stars above.<\/p>\n

Everything is set, except there\u2019s been an unexpected arrival. One of Shanice\u2019s cousins showed up with their partner, and she\u2019s concerned about being short a room, and two table settings. I\u2019m more excited about the fact that we\u2019re short one room. The solution is obvious. I\u2019m smirking the whole way to the room. Kennedy looks up from where she\u2019s perched on the couch, scrolling through her phone when I walk in through the connecting door, no longer surprised by my appearance in her space.<\/p>\n
