45 Just 30 kilometres from Venice and a 30-minute train ride, Treviso\u2019s airport is used by many people heading for the tourist-packed floating city. It is a pity that very few travellers stay and explore Treviso itself, which has a charming walled centre with canals dotted with ancient waterwheels and contemporary sculptures, and pretty rivers perfect for strolling or cycling. It has frescoed fa\u00e7ades dating from the 12th to the 14th century, and impressive paintings in its churches, such as some by 14th-century artist Tommaso da Modena.<\/p>\n

It is a pity that very few travellers stay and explore Treviso itself, which has a charming walled centre with canals dotted with ancient waterwheels and contemporary sculptures, and pretty rivers 46 ITALIA! April\/May 2026 Italy\u2019s largest sea port receives significantly fewer tourists than more popular Italian cities, and though tatty in places, it offers a blend of medieval charm coupled with vibrant street life. You have to sample some pesto when stopping to eat while wandering through the narrow alleyways of the old city, filled with baroque architecture \u2013 it is the birthplace of the delicious basil and parmesan pasta sauce.<\/p>\n

If you need a break from the elegant architecture, museums and galleries, there are boutique shops to peruse and plenty of characterful caf\u00e9s. A large aquarium is located in the renovated old port. It is a good base for hiking, biking, horse riding, kayaking and boat tours. This overlooked, underrated, ancient port city boasts spectacular views and a characterful old town, without the crowds and costs of nearby Amalfi.<\/p>\n

While very much a working city, it is more laidback than Naples, and if you\u2019re not exploring the narrow streets and alleyways and their inviting boutiques, bars, medieval churches and neighbourhood trattorias in the slightly dishevelled centre, you can hit the beach, take a stroll along the tree-lined seafront promenade, or perhaps the magnificent cathedral, imposing Arechi castle perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, or further afield to the archeological sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum and Vesuvius.<\/p>\n

April\/May 2026ITALIA! 47 With a wonderful backdrop of mountains and vine-clad hills, this compact and elegant historic city is an Alpine gateway where Austrian charm meets Italian flair. Its architecture is a fusion of Renaissance, Gothic and Rococo and includes a cathedral with a frescoed cloister and the Palace of the Prince-Bishop. Dining here ranges from unpretentious little family restaurants to Michelin-starred establishments. Many mountain trails and more than 50 kilometres of bike paths are accessible from the city.<\/p>\n
