n the autumn of 1862, Abraham Lincoln visited the Union Army camp at Sharpsburg, Maryland, USA. Two years earlier, he had been elected president of the United States, and now civil war was raging. The North and South had long been at odds over the right to own slaves, now with Lincoln\u2019s inauguration, tensions boiled over into a full-blown war. The Southern States withdrew from the Union, while the Northern States sought to enforce the Union\u2019s authority.<\/p>\n

The American Civil War was just one of the many dramatic upheavals that would shape the young nation. Lincoln was not a supporter of the war, but a democratic republic could not allow a rebellious minority to hold sway. The South had to be put in its place. As such, the main reason for the war was not originally the liberation of slaves. After Lincoln\u2019s Gettysburg Address in 1863, however, it became clear that the president meant to honour the words of the United States\u2019 Declaration of Independence that all men were created equal.<\/p>\n

That meant every single person, regardless of skin colour. 1565-1776 1818-1865 1519-1890 1863 4 11. BULLETS RULED THE WEST The US was the land of opportunity for men who could keep their heads cool and their revolver steady. 3. NOMADS OF THE PRAIRIE The white man\u2019s horse gave the Plains Indians a new way of life, but the warrior culture perished.<\/p>\n

2. COTTON CREATED THE SOUTH In the early 1800s, a small but powerful elite created a society based on cotton grown by black slaves. 1. COLONY BECOMES 7. STATES IN BLOODY CONFLICT The future of the US was decided at the Battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. 6. BLACK STRUGGLE Whips and hard labour were commonplace for Southern slaves who risked their lives fighting for freedom. 10. WHOLE WORLD IN Italians, Irish and Chinese toiled in the narrow streets of Manhattan, leaving their mark on their neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n
