The bond we have with them makes us want to keep them close. Letting them explore the world and become their full selves is scary because we can’t be sure of protecting them from danger or costly decisions. When we give ourselves permission to let our children move on, we have to let them make their own decisions, which might also mean making mistakes.

Because we care for them so much, we don’t want to see them get hurt or endanger their future. At the same time, if we don’t let go, it prevents them from figuring out how to navigate life on their own terms. Letting go and moving on doesn’t mean we don’t interact with them as they get older, share our opinion if they request it, and even support them along the way. It just means that we give them space to make their own choices and recover from their mistakes, if necessary.

It also means giving ourselves permission to be patient so that we don’t jump in to rescue them while they figure it out. This can make us feel like we’re trapped because, while we want to help them, we also have to trust that we’ve equipped them with the tools and skills they need for their lives and future. If you find yourself having a hard time letting go and giving your adult children space, consider talking to a therapist to help you during this phase of life.

Of course, young adults also have to let go and move on. It’s a two- way street. Many young people struggle to make life choices and launch into adulthood. The goal is to have an adult-to-adult relationship with their parents. While they might never be able to give to their parents as much as they receive, an adult-to-adult relationship creates a giver-and-receiver dynamic.

To do this, young adults have to take on more responsibility for their life and become comfortable with more autonomy. Giving themselves permission to let go doesn’t mean they have to disregard what their parents and loved ones say, or refuse to receive help when they need it.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Dr. George James, and he helped me grow and understand both the journey I was on and the one ahead.
