I may have kept my distance back then but I\u2019d always thought he was dreamy. Years later, we were friends only, but hey\u2026I wasn\u2019t dead. I was a healthy thirty-year-old gay man with an appreciation for hotness. And friend or not, Zane was definitely hot. He was one of the few people I knew who straddled the line between hip and traditional with flair. He was approachable and fun, but he didn\u2019t take any bullshit. And he was easy on the eyes today in his perfectly fitted Levis and a snug navy pullover.<\/p>\n

Zane caught my stare and gave me his signature pirate\u2019s smile. A lopsided knowing grin that screamed sex. Or maybe I was seeing things. Without a drop of liquor in my system, that couldn\u2019t be a good sign. I poured a generous glass of wine and cautioned myself to pull it together. \u201cI can\u2019t help it. Boats make me nervous,\u201d I said, leaning forward to tap my glass against his bottle.<\/p>\n

\u201cCheers.\u201d \u201cKick back and relax. We\u2019re not going anywhere now.\u201d \u201cWhat do you mean? You\u2019ve been badgering me for days to come out here and get some fresh air. I thought your evil plan was to take me out to Alcatraz and leave my ass there for the night. You\u2019ve reconsidered?\u201d Zane snorted. \u201cYeah. If you suspect I\u2019m up to no good, it kinda ruins the surprise factor, ya know? Besides, you were late. By the time we get into deep water, it\u2019ll be time to turn around again.<\/p>\n

And\u2026I\u2019ve got a date tonight. Can\u2019t be late.\u201d I didn\u2019t understand my instant twinge of displeasure. I slipped my sunglasses off and hooked them on my collar before looking out to take in the beautiful setting. Zane\u2019s boat was one of the smaller ones docked in Yacht Harbor. It was tucked in between two larger vessels but the view beyond the jetty of the Golden Gate Bridge to our left and Alcatraz to our right was spectacular. On a foggy day, you might see the tip of the bridge or nothing at all.<\/p>\n

Today it was clear. It didn\u2019t matter how long I lived in San Francisco, I would never get tired of the man-made marvels or the rugged landscape surrounding the turbulent Bay. \u201cOh?\u201d I drawled. \u201cAnyone I know?\u201d \u201cNope. Grindr hookup. I met him once for coffee. Tonight we\u2019re meeting for a drink.\u201d \u201cI guess skipping a lunch and dinner date in between sounds promising. Here\u2019s to getting lucky.\u201d I raised my glass again but didn\u2019t bother clinking it against Zane\u2019s. I was feeling more out of sorts by the second.<\/p>\n

It was tempting to blame my mood on Nick\u2019s news, but this felt more like jealousy and that was plain crazy.<\/p>\n

Shifting in the slightly off-balance chair, Kyle Potter looked up from his phone. He was in a bar, surrounded by laughing, drinking, dancing men, but all he could focus on was the too-long to-do list he had left at the office. He blinked at his friend, his brain struggling to change gears from emails to what was supposed to be a fun night out, his first in over a month.<\/p>\n

Shaking his head, he said, \u201cNo, I just got here.\u201d \u201cCool.\u201d Matthew sat and darted his gaze from side to side. \u201cIs anyone using those chairs?\u201d He pointed to another table. \u201cUh. I have no idea.\u201d Kyle had walked into the bar, found an empty spot, and started checking his messages. He hadn\u2019t had time to get a drink let alone scope out his surroundings. \u201cTable looks empty.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m grabbing them.\u201d Matthew pushed his seat back, hustled over to the other table, and returned, dragging the two wood chairs behind him. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with ours?\u201d Kyle asked, twisting around to look at his seat. The bar lighting was dim, but from what he could see, all the chairs looked the same. \u201cThese aren\u2019t for us. Brent and Tony are coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
