Do not indicate your reaction. Just listen and have your point of view so we know what you are thinking. The practice of active listening gives you real, subtle reactions.

Know, don’t show is my favorite motto. 5. Play the beginning, middle, and end of the scene Yes, all of that is included in a three-second spot. It is your job to establish what happened right before the scene starts, what the climax of the scene or turning point is, and what is the resolve and how to keep the life going after the last scripted line. This is necessary to do for yourself, even if your only line is a response to, “Do you want fries with that?”

The beginning of the scene is fueled by where you just came from or what you just heard. Your first scripted line is always generated by something that preceded it; the scene doesn’t start in a vacuum. Don’t expect this information will be given to you. Some savvy session directors will give you something, but remember they will probably give the same info to every actor who auditions for the role.

Do you want to do the same thing on the audition tape that every other actor does? I caution you not to make it some grandiose, extraordinary happening. Keep it real and within the scope of your life and your role. Make it something that would naturally occur before you order a hamburger. Perhaps you checked your wallet to make sure your credit card is in there.

Or perhaps a friend called and asked you to bring a burger back to the office. The middle or the climax/turn of the scene is just that. What changes? Look for the change and then you can construct the rise to the turn of the scene. The bigger the stakes, the bigger the turn. So make sure you want something enough, even if it is just to order a hamburger.

What People Are Saying about Judy Kain and the “I Booked It” Techniques She Teaches I love her interactive teaching and constructive suggestions that allow the actor to make their own choices.
