Let her believe what she wants. It\u2019s no use getting into who dumped who.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeft turn on Maple Leaf St. 200 feet ahead.\u201d \u201cWell, I knew that,\u201d your dad says. \u201cIt\u2019s like I always say,\u201d your mother continues, \u201cWhat\u2019s meant to be, will be!\u201d \u201cRight.\u201d You gaze out the window, knowing you\u2019ll be fine once you get on the highway and leave all these back roads behind. \u201cStay on the current road for two miles.\u201d \u201cI swear, that voice is so familiar.\u201d Mark looks to the van\u2019s upholstered ceiling as if he might find the answer there. Your abs clench.<\/p>\n

You hope he doesn\u2019t. Susan busies herself surfing radio stations until she finds 109.6: Best of the Oldies. At the next rest stop, you\u2019ll get your headphones from your bag. You should\u2019ve thought of that before you got going. Now it\u2019s going to be soft rock for the next hour. \u201cThis is so wonderful,\u201d Susan says, watching pine trees whip by the window.<\/p>\n

\u201cMust be twenty years since we\u2019ve been on a family trip. She grins wide enough for you to see her sparkling metal fillings from the backseat. Then she catches herself. \u201cSo sorry to hear about Sadie though. She sounded like a lovely girl. I\u2019m sure it\u2019s for the best.\u201d She smoothes her floral blouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer loss,\u201d you say. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, I didn\u2019t understand that.\u201d Susan\u2019s hand hovers over the navigation screen, where once again a red circle spins. \u201cLeft turn ahead.\u201d Your father yanks the steering wheel, barely catching the turn in time. \u201cYou\u2019d think it\u2019d give us a little more heads-up than that!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust keep an eye on the screen.\u201d You remember that two-hour trip to Dollywood that ended up taking four. And your mother wonders why it\u2019s been twenty years since you agreed to a road trip. Mark tucks his Kindle beneath your mom\u2019s seat and starts flipping through his phone. You rest your head against the window. It\u2019s chilled from the blowing AC, and the cold burrows into your temple like a termite, like a maggot laying eggs, stabilizing the rising motion sickness.<\/p>\n

You close your eyes, thinking you might be able to nap, sleep away the twistiest part of the trip and wake once you\u2019re on the highway. \u201cIt is her!\u201d Mark\u2019s eyes gape with petty delight. He yanks his headphones off and thrusts the phone to where your mother can see.<\/p>\n
