Is there something you need that I can help with?\u201d Coach asked. \u201cWell, I was planning on seeing a psychiatrist,\u201d Matt said, \u201cBut maybe I can bounce something off of you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShoot,\u201d said Coach, \u201cOh, sorry, guess I shouldn\u2019t have said that.\u201d Matt smiled. \u201cOK.\u201d He cleared his throat and took a breath in preparation. \u201cI hear a person talking to me who has been gone for over two years. She helps me with my work. There. I said it.\u201d Coach took a sip of his Jameson. \u201cI\u2019m assuming you knew this person when she was alive?\u201d \u201cWe were lovers and a committed couple for twenty-four years. We both worked for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, NCIS.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure you heard the story of the KGB agent who killed all the sailors?\u201d \u201cYou were involved in that?\u201d Coach said, raising his eyebrows. \u201cI was the reason Makarov was doing what he was doing. He kidnapped Randy, my girlfriend, and took her to Russia, where she died in front of me at Makarov\u2019s hands.\u201d Coach gave a whistle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWow. That\u2019s a lot. And now you hear Randy speaking?\u201d \u201cI just started hearing her voice recently. Not only does she speak, but we have conversations. She has been giving me a lot of good advice.\u201d \u201cWell, you finally admit I\u2019m helping. I was wondering if I\u2019d ever get an affirmation from you, Bertram,\u201d Randy said from some vague place behind Matt. Because of the pause, Coach said, \u201cShe\u2019s talking to you right now, isn\u2019t she?\u201d Matt nodded. \u201cMatt, I\u2019ve seen a lot of weird and unexplainable things in my life.<\/p>\n

My time in Vietnam produced more than a few ghosts that I\u2019ve had to deal with.\u201d \u201cOh, geeze, he\u2019s going with the ghost thing,\u201d said Randy. \u201cWalk away, Matt, this guy\u2019s a loser.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not saying you\u2019re hearing a ghost,\u201d Amos said, almost as though he had heard Randy. \u201cI\u2019m just saying that in the sense of \u2018unseen things,\u2019\u201d Coach said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrief can produce a whole helluva lot of weird things, and everybody grieves in their own way.<\/p>\n
