Understandably embarrassed, she never stopped by again.) The long separations she endured while he traveled were painful and strained their relationship. But in the White House that all seemed behind her. She felt she could put those seven hated years of politics in the past and forget the emotional upheaval.

“Now that Jack’s in the White House, maybe he can finally relax and start enjoying us as a family,” she said. Kennedy refused to be domesticated. “When I start to ask him silly little insignificant questions about whether Caroline should appear at some reception, or whether I should wear a short or long dress,” Jackie said, “he just snaps his fingers and says, ‘That’s your province.’ And I say, ‘Yes, but you’re the great decision-maker. Why should everyone but me get the benefit of your decisions?’ ” Kennedy did take an interest in his wife’s clothes, insisting that she never wear brown or flowered pat- terns, which he did not Uke.

She also avoided tur- quoise, feeling that the color made her look sallow. Modeling everything for him beforehand, she once dis- played a collection sent to the White House by Oleg Cassini. “Jackie,” said the President, “You’ve got to send those dresses back. They make you look Uke a gypsy.” So back they went. Respecting her husband’s request that she support the millinery industry as First Lady, Jackie began wearing hats. On occasion Kennedy winced when he saw some of her headgear, and insisted that she change.

One day when Kenneth flew down from New York to do Jackie’s hair, the President walked into the room. Seeing the sophisticated coiffure he had created for the First Lady, the President gulped. “My God,” he said to the hairdresser. “What are you trying to do — ruin my political career?” Kenneth spent a half-hour recombing Jackie’s hair before the President was satis- fied.

Never an affectionate husband, Jack Kennedy re- mained as aloof in private as he was in public. “It Jackie Oh! wasn’t untU he had Caroline that he was able to show affection of any kind,” said Betty Spalding. “Jack loved teasing her and playing games and rough-housing with John- John.” Jackie, too, lavished affection on her chil- dren, ignoring their tantrums and allowing them to run about as they wished. (When the White House curator, Lorraine Pearce, slapped Caroline’s hands for playing with some of the breakable antiques, Jackie banished her to the Executive Ofl&ce, and, once she finished writing the White House guide book, she fired her.)

Copyright © 1978 by Kitty Kelley All rights reserved under International and Pan-American Copy- right Conventions. More than 350 peo- ple were contacted in preparation for this book, in- cluding close friends and family members. Some were afraid to cooperate without her permission and others agreed to be interviewed only on condition that their names never be mentioned. So only a few people can be thanked here but I am grateful to all for their help and cooperation.

I made several attempts to interview Mrs. Onassis herself but each of my letters and telephone calls went unanswered. Later I began writing and calling her sec- retary, Nancy Tuckerman, who informed me on each occasion that she could not cooperate in any way. So I relied on extensive personal interviews, plus second- ary source material from books and articles. The time and energy necessary to research this bi- ography would have been formidable without the help of people like Leslie Heifer, Julia Kogut, Mary Haver- stock, L.

MacGregor Phipps, Keri Corcoran, Dick Leggitt, John Sullivan, Tom Wolfe, Philip Nobile, Marcus and Barbara Raskin, Judy Klemesrud, Carey Wmfrey, Paul Wieck, Al Maysles, Anne Chamberlin, Joel Oppenheimer, Silvia Koner, Jerry Anderson, Mervin Block, Betty Teitgen, Pat Tidwell, Joe Goulden, Jane O’Reilly, Don UflSnger, Terry Gwyn, David vll Author’s Note Michel, Steve Blaschke, Muffie Childs, Patricia Bos- worth, K.
