Sir Charles Keyms, a close friend of Beaufort and also of Judge Jeffreys and Lord Craven, was appalled to find that it was widely assumed that he had answered in the King’s favour to the three questions.

So was Sir John Carne, who felt he had been slandered by the rumour. The Purge The failure of the canvass of the three questions in Wales did not deter James from pressing forward with his policies. In order to promote those who would support the King’s ambitions and to punish those who would not, James initiated further purges of the members of the commission of the peace, the militia and the lieutenancy. He adopted the same approach as the earlier quo warranto policy of Charles II: to exclude from membership of borough corporations any who opposed his objective.

Paradoxically it often punished those who were James’s traditional Tory supporters and promoted those Catholics and Dissenters who had previously been marginalised but who might be prepared to support him in exchange for local power and influence. Beaufort himself was not immune to the rigours of James’s policy.

His son, the Marquis of Worcester, was ejected from his commission in the Duke of York’s regiment and replaced with the Marquis of Powis’s son, Lord Montgomery. Lord Worcester, unlike his father, was a principled Protestant who would not bend his principles. He had gone as far as to join the address in November 1685 asking James to withdraw army commissions which he had issued during the emergency of the Monmouth Rebellion. It was this address that had so enraged James that he peremptorily prorogued parliament.

In the national purge of the lists of deputy lieutenants and magistrates that followed the canvass, Wales was badly hit. Even before the canvass of the questions, Lord Chancellor Jeffreys had been seeking possible candidates to insert into the commissions for the peace in Wales.

© William Gibson, 2026 All rights reserved.
