The air smelled of ink and coal smoke. Jane led the way down the alley to the shop. The printer looked up when they entered, and his expression shifted from curiosity to alarm when he recognized her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou,\u201d he said. \u201cI told you all I know.\u201d Jane placed the pamphlet on the counter. \u201cThen repeat it.\u201d The printer glanced at Darcy and Bingley, then back at Jane. He swallowed. \u201cHeight slightly above average. Slim build. Dark coat, well-tailored. Educated voice. Pale tan kid-leather gloves. Paid with a single guinea\u2014too much for the job.\u201d \u201cIs there anything else?\u201d Jane asked. The printer hesitated, then nodded. \u201cI kept a ledger. Nothing formal, just notes for myself.\u201d He moved to a shelf and withdrew a small book bound in cheap brown leather.<\/p>\n

He opened it and turned the pages until he found the entry. \u201cHere,\u201d he said, pointing. \u201cGentleman. Paid in gold. No name.\u201d Beside the date, two letters were written: C\u2014F. Jane leaned closer. \u201cWhat does this mean?\u201d \u201cI heard him speak to someone outside the shop after he left,\u201d the printer said. \u201cThe man addressed him, and I caught those initials.<\/p>\n

I wrote them down in case there was trouble later.\u201d Darcy stepped forward and studied the ledger. \u201cIn London, fashionable men with those initials are few.\u201d Bingley\u2019s jaw tightened. \u201cCaulfield.\u201d Darcy glanced at him. \u201cIt is a possibility. Not a certainty.\u201d Elizabeth touched Jane\u2019s arm. \u201cYou must verify the lead yourself.\u201d Jane nodded. \u201cWe go to the Bingley townhouse.\u201d By midday, the group arrived at Bingley\u2019s London townhouse. The butler admitted them with polite wariness, his gaze moving between Jane and Bingley.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Bingley,\u201d Jane said quietly, \u201cI must ask you to summon Mr. Caulfield and Miss Bingley.\u201d Bingley did not hesitate. \u201cOf course. Anything that assists the truth.\u201d He instructed the butler, who bowed and withdrew. Within ten minutes, Caroline and Mr. Caulfield entered the main drawing room. Caroline\u2019s expression was composed but tight.<\/p>\n

Caulfield appeared curious, even amused. \u201cMiss Bennet,\u201d he said with a small bow. \u201cWhat an unexpected gathering.\u201d Jane did not return the pleasantry. She withdrew the pamphlet from her reticule and placed it on the table between them. \u201cDid you commission this, Mr. Caulfield?\u201d Caulfield glanced at the pamphlet, then back at her.<\/p>\n

His smile did not waver. \u201cI do not involve myself in anonymous publications, Miss Bennet. I have no interest in your affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was nothing left to say that had not already been said in the weeks of his decline. Mrs. Hill appeared in the doorway, her face drawn with exhaustion. A young maid hovered behind her, clutching a basin. \u201cMiss Bennet,\u201d Mrs. Hill said quietly, \u201cshall we\u2014\u201d \u201cThank you, Mrs. Hill,\u201d Jane interrupted gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will sit with him now. You may go.\u201d The housekeeper hesitated, then nodded. She and the maid withdrew, closing the door with care. Jane sat in the chair beside the bed. Her father\u2019s chest rose and fell in shallow rhythm. His hand lay slack against the counterpane.<\/p>\n

She did not take it \u2014not yet. The clock on the mantel showed a quarter past four. A knock sounded from the corridor below. Jane heard the muffled exchange of voices, then footsteps ascending the stairs. Mrs. Hill appeared again, her expression cautious. \u201cForgive me, Miss Bennet, but there is a Mr. Weston from Meryton at the door. He insists he must speak with you directly.\u201d Jane rose. \u201cI will come down.\u201d \u201cHe says it concerns your father,\u201d Mrs. Hill added, her voice dropping. \u201cHe seems\u2026 unsettled.\u201d Jane glanced back at the bed.<\/p>\n

Mr. Bennet had not stirred. \u201cI will return shortly,\u201d she said. She descended the stairs and found Weston standing stiffly in the front hall, his hat clutched between his hands.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
