I’ve been a fan of LitRPG books since they first started appearing. Like many of you, I didn’t enjoy wading through all the stat tables and what seem to be constant quests such books often entail. Then I realized, aren’t the novels I’ve already written just a series of quests Hazard King, Julie Adams, and my other characters are trying to accomplish?

I’d already decided to write a space opera adventure set in the near future. This series, in fact. Why not weave a little role-playing into it, but—and this is a big but—not overwhelm the reader with that side of the story? I think I’ve accomplished that. For those of you who don’t want to delve into all the point distribution and such involved in this type of book, I’ve separated acceptance scenes into separate intermissions you can skip. One other comment to clear up any confusion that may arise involving the dialogue you’ll encounter.

Tammy Escobar has multiple conversations with telepathic aliens and an AI that’s embedded in her body. Per typical writing convention, when Tammy—or anyone else—is thinking, the text is in italics. But when someone else is using telepathy to talk to her, or her AI is talking to her, their side of the conversation will use quotation marks, because someone else is talking, and italics because it’s happening inside Tammy’s head.

I hope this explanation makes things less confusing and allows you to enjoy the interactions. Now, enjoy Janissary Commander.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
