He was probably the strongest looking man she\u2019d ever met, with muscles coming out of muscles, but in the healthy \u2013 I\u2019ve spent my life outdoors using my body like a caveman \u2013 kind of way instead of a gym junkie. \u201cYou look like you\u2019re doing okay for a homeless man.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s mostly self-inflicted. I\u2019ve been seeing a lot of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow\u2019s that working for you?\u201d she asked. Pax spread his hands. \u201cIt\u2019s been beautiful and grotesque\u2026 in equal proportions.\u201d \u201cI knew you would go into the CIA or some other clandestine organization\u2026\u201d She shook her head, still unable to believe Pax was sitting here having lunch with her. \u201cYou\u2019ve probably killed people in every one of those countries.\u201d \u201cIt was a job.\u201d Pax spread his massive hands. \u201cWhat about you?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t work.<\/p>\n

I mean, I volunteer at a couple of homeless shelters. It\u2019s a good thing to do, and I had to do something to keep myself busy, but it\u2019s not exactly what I dreamed of when I was growing up.\u201d Pax looked at her warmly. \u201cI want to hear how you got here, and for that matter, where here is for you?\u201d \u201cHow far back do you want me to go?\u201d she asked, knowing that for the first time since she\u2019d met John Milton at a creepy motel in the forest of Estes Park, she was willing to tell her story.<\/p>\n

Kimberly Riddle dropped them into the kitchen sink. They struck the metal basin with a clank that seemed far too loud in the quiet house. She immediately pressed the soap dispenser and shoved her hands under the running water, scrubbing hard, building a thick, foamy lather as she rubbed her palms together with frantic urgency. She had turned on only the hot tap. The water grew hotter by the second, her skin flushing red as the temperature climbed, but she felt none of it.<\/p>\n

Pain required awareness, and she was far beyond that. Numb. Hollow. Focused on one thing alone \u2013 getting the blood off her hands. They never told you how difficult that was. Blood clung. It worked its way into the creases of her skin, under her nails, into the fine lines she had never noticed before. It smeared instead of disappearing, turning the soap pink, then red again. There was so much of it. Her eyes drifted to the scissors lying in the sink.<\/p>\n

A dark line marked the blades, tracing exactly how deep they had cut across her husband\u2019s throat. The image burned itself into her mind \u2013 the resistance, the sudden give, the way the blood had come out in a violent rush. She didn\u2019t know much about anatomy, but she knew enough to understand what she had damaged, possibly even severed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
