Businesses often have to pay sales tax on products and services used by the business. A government occasionally uses excise taxes to discourage consumption (like with a soda tax) or to make money for the government. Outside of the US, many governments use value-added tax (VAT) to collect revenue to indirectly pay for government services and programs that facilitate manufacturing and distribution.<\/p>\n

Goods or services used during production may also be subject to VAT. When operating in these countries, businesses must know rates and rules for applying, collecting, and paying VAT, both to comply with requirements and to set prices competitively. 5.2.3 Employment laws Laws that apply to employment practices, including rights and responsibilities, working hours, taxation, training, wages, and other benefits, safety, and anti-discrimination, vary throughout the world. Businesses invest time in understanding employment laws and regulations to better predict the costs, training, and risks associated with human resources.<\/p>\n

American companies follow federal standards set for working standards, including pay and recordkeeping, through the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Similar standards exist throughout the world. The International Labor Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for establishing working standards throughout the world. Countries may follow international standards or develop bespoke requirements regarding minimum wage, overtime pay, working hours, rest breaks, and annual leave entitlements.<\/p>\n

Governments are typically concerned with worker safety. American workers are protected by the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), a federal law that establishes health and safety requirements for workplaces.<\/p>\n
