These findings suggest the value of ongoing efforts to foster language that transcends the gender binary and is inclusive of the full array of gender identities.

Heterosexist language is language that assumes heterosexuality is superior to other sexual orientations. In the most explicit form, hetero- sexist language includes derogatory comments, jokes, or threats about the sexual practices of someone who is not heterosexual. Heterosexist lan- guage also surfaces in more subtle ways, such as references to romantic partners that assume a heterosexual relationship or terms for sexual iden- tities that contrast cisgender heterosexuality with all other possibilities.

Research suggests that sexual and gender minority adolescents embrace a far greater variety of labels than were used even just a decade ago, including pansexual, nonbinary, and asexual (Watson et al., 2020). Our language use is less heterosexist when we use an array of terms that match the nuanced ways in which people identify their sexuality. Sometimes heterosexist language is used because of the way our language is constructed, with no explicit intention of marginalizing alter- native sexualities. For example, research suggests that sexual minori- ties regularly experience microaggressions from counselors, including statements that assume they are heterosexual, ignore their sexuality, or presume that their reason for seeking counseling is grounded in their sexuality (Spengler et al., 2016).

Other times people use derogatory sex- ual terms intentionally. Peer victimization (i.e., bullying) during adoles- cence is greater for gender nonconforming children (van Beusekom et al., 2020), and being on the receiving end of such bullying has serious consequences, including an increase in suicide planning (Turpin et al., 2019).

Beyond middle and high school, exposure to derogatory heter- osexist language continues to harm people. For example, among col- lege students, exposure to heterosexist microaggressions is associated with worse academic outcomes, such as a lower grade point average, among sexual minority students (Mathies et al., 2019). These examples demonstrate the far-reaching and serious consequences of problematic language use. Attitudes Toward Sexist/ Nonsexist Language As communicators, we are often unaware of the sexist implications of our language. Undergraduate texts addressing the topic-area abound, but two of the fields’ top scholars have succeeded in crafting a first-rate overview of the extensive body of work bearing on interpersonal processes. The reader will find a seamless combination of classic, seminal work and contemporary advances, with particular emphasis on the latter.

Additionally, students will find the Communication in Action and Connect with Theory components of each chapter to be useful tools in concretizing and making more personally relevant theoretical treatments that might otherwise seem somewhat divorced from their own experiences.” John O. Greene, Purdue University, USA “This book provides a solid foundation to teach interpersonal communication skills that facilitate solutions to complex human problems. The authors find a great balance between density and presentation of core concepts.

The book provides well-presented content for students to understand core concepts and significant issues, and to reflect on their own communication practices, experiences, and possibilities for making a difference through skillful interpersonal communication.” Ashley P. Duggan, Boston College, USA “Solomon and Theiss have once again delivered an exceptional text that blends theoretical rigor with real-world relevance.

Interpersonal Communication: Putting Theory into Practice, Third Edition engages students not only with accessible explanations of foundational and contemporary research but also with thought-provoking questions that invite personal reflection and skill development. This is more than a textbook; it’s a guide to becoming a more mindful, competent speaker and listener in both personal and professional life.” Graham Bodie, University of Mississippi, USA INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION The third edition of this text continues to provide a comprehensive and practical introduction to the field of interpersonal communication, linking theory to the everyday so that readers may navigate personal, social, and professional situations in ways that are fulfilling and effective.

This edition again builds on foundational research and theory with attention to current developments in the discipline and guidance on improving interpersonal communication skills. Key updates to this edition include a reorganization and streamlining of chapters, in particular by combining complementary discussions of culture and identity and of perception and listening.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
