I moved to hit the Off button on the notifications, knowing I’d have to see them flashing in the corner of the screen instead.

Every second felt like a ticking clock, counting down to a departure we weren’t sure we were ready for, but had to be. Our ships were filled to capacity, a constant reminder of the massive crew and supplies needed for our journey to the Dolx quadrant. But despite the stress, it was satisfying to see the boxes ticked up on the screens before us. Suddenly, my comms device beeped, and I quickly answered, “Frost, speaking.” “We have an incoming transmission from Grand Admiral Selia on Hidaba Four,” Ashleigh’s voice came through my comms.

“Shall I patch it through?” “Please do, and project it on the screen for all of us to see,” I replied. The image of Grand Admiral Selia and his daughter appeared before us. “Grand Admiral,” I greeted him with a nod. “Good to see you again. Lieutenant Commander Wells and my brother are with me. Let’s coordinate this operation. Once they’re settled in, we’ll have everything we need to make our departure.” I knew David was just as eager as I was to get out of this system. Every day spent here put the Claymons at risk, despite Ketah’s efforts to bring other races closer for protection. The early reports were coming in that the Haki-Sha weren’t leaving the area and were killing anything that came close.

As we waited for communication with Baxter’s fleet, my mind wandered to everything that had been weighing on me. The news from Doc and Eboni, the decisions I had to make for my team and family.

This ebook is licensed for your personal enjoyment only and may not be re-sold or given away to other people.
