I learned how to go numb in the system, only allowing myself to feel through my brushes of a paint stroke, and nothing more. And it was enough\u2026 until it wasn\u2019t, and I needed to feel life beneath my feet. Another text lights up my phone. Can he not take the hint? Irritation sits under my skin. Billy isn\u2019t even a decent friend. Or an actual friend, for that matter. We party and do crazy shit, but I don\u2019t even know his last name, and I doubt he knows mine.<\/p>\n

That says something. I ignore him. It doesn\u2019t take long for my number one distraction to swing back around and take up residence in my head again. Olly. I keep replaying the other night over and over in my head. The way he kissed me. The way he sucked me to within an inch of my life. The way he looked at me, past my shiny shell, sent shivers down my spine. My obsession is feeling less like an obsession and more like a\u2026 friendship? With kissing and blow jobs?<\/p>\n

I\u2019m in too deep and the odds of this blowing up in my face are high. \u201cHey, Jasper.\u201d Another distraction. I look to see Dom leaning against the door of my workstation. \u201cHey, what\u2019s up?\u201d \u201cI was thinking of heading over to Dragonfly for lunch. Do you wanna go?\u201d I look down at my watch and see it\u2019s already past noon.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen are you leaving?\u201d He shrugs. \u201cI was just finishing up inventory at my station, so say, fifteen minutes?\u201d \u201cYeah, ok.\u201d I go back to finishing up what I\u2019m working on, once again getting lost in the zone until Dom says he\u2019s ready to go and we head out. Dragonfly is busy, but we snag seats along the back wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey guys,\u201d Spencer greets us. \u201cHow\u2019s it going?\u201d Dom asks. \u201cOh, you know, just another day of running around with my head chopped off.\u201d \u201cAnd how is the spy?\u201d I ask, because I still don\u2019t trust the tiny human. Spencer beams, and it\u2019s contagious. Happiness radiates from him. \u201cShe\u2019s amazing,\u201d he says, as he practically twirls. \u201cWe somehow timed her naps to be over the lunch rush. I don\u2019t know how long that\u2019s gonna last, but hopefully, until I get another server hired.\u201d He looks around at the busy caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis tiny little town has really come into its own, hasn\u2019t it?\u201d \u201cIt has. Even Olly is hiring and expanding with the idea of the bakery.\u201d I know I was grumpy about him stepping away from The Diner, but I\u2019m happy for him. It\u2019s the idea of leaving something stable for something uncertain that makes me nervous.<\/p>\n
